The man leaves home in the country to seek his fortune in the city. He tells his mother he will work for her and come back rich. After kissing his mother and sweetheart goodbye, he tells the latter to look after his mother. In later years, he has gained success and fortune, but has forgotten his promises. He is leading a life of dissipation. The old mother sits at home dreaming of her boy and the sweetheart decides to write, telling him he is breaking his mother's heart by neglect. The man receives the letter in the midst of one of his gay parties, and destroys it. A scrub woman who cleans his office is discharged by the janitor because she caught him drinking. She goes to the man while he is in the midst of a fancy dress ball, and after some trouble the butler tells him a woman wants to see him. He leaves the woman he is dancing with, and goes to see the scrub woman. She tell him her troubles, and while he is handing her some money he sees her old work-worn hands, which remind him of his mother. He rushes back into the ballroom and denounces all his so-called friends who try to stop him. He rushes to his dressing room, changes his clothes, calls his machine and drives rapidly to the depot, where he takes a train to the old home. His mother and sweetheart receive him with open arms and the man begins a new life.
