The Jocular Winds of Fate (1912)
Titled but in debt, Lord Drumleigh is advised by his lawyer to marry an heiress. He recommends the daughter of Heinrich Humph, a brewer with plenty of money but no ancestry. The brewer, out motoring with his family, discovers that his chauffeur is intoxicated and dismisses him on the spot, but is unable to run the machine himself. Lord Drumleigh, in his machine with his lawyer, sees Humph. The legal gent goes to his assistance, suggesting that his chauffeur will take them home. He goes back to Drumleigh and tells him to "get next" to the brewer. When the brewer reaches home, he employs Lord Drumleigh as his chauffeur, not knowing who he is. When the lord gets sight of Juliet Humph, the daughter, he is surprised and disappointed, for she is a most arrogant and homely upstart. Mrs. DeVoe, an ambitious matron, desires to marry her daughter Alice, a beautiful heiress, to Dickie Dewes, a priggish young man with a lineage. Alice objects and answers an advertisement inserted by the Humphs for a maid. She gets the position, meets Lord Drumleigh, and they fall in love with each other. The lawyer now informs Humph who the chauffeur really is. Juliet and her parents become very deferential to him. He declares his intentions of marrying Alice, the maid, and she, surprising everyone, discloses herself to be an heiress in her own right.
