After Many Years (1912)

Arrested as an outlaw, Malede is brought by the sheriff to his father's and sister's home. His sister Marie rushes in sympathy to her brother and, when the sheriff tells them that the boy has been accused of murder, the old father beckons Marie aside and warns him not to speak to Malede: he is accursed forever. Marie loves her brother dearly and is disturbed by the thought of his imprisonment. Marie's husband, who has never met Malede, becomes suspicious of her restless actions. A few days later, Malede escapes from the sheriff. He sends a note to Marie to meet him in the alfalfa field for a last goodbye. Her husband follows her, and when he sees the brother and sister embrace, he is jealous, and deserts her. The husband makes his way into the mountains and becomes a prospector. Years afterward, he strikes it rich and determines to return to his wife and child. Marie has refused many offers of marriage, but remains hopeful that her husband could yet return. Her daughter has married and Marie is now alone. On his way back to Marie, her husband is waylaid by thieves and robbed of his gold. Exhausted and wounded, he drags himself to Marie's lone cabin. Although he is aged and changed, she recognizes him and welcomes him with the love that has remained forever constant.
