Alice's Sacrifice (1911)

Alice Moore and Allan Dean had been sweethearts from childhood. Allan had high ambitions to become a playwright. In all his early struggles, Alice was his comforter, adviser, and steadfast friend. Finally word came from New York that he should visit the metropolis and call upon well-known manager and producer Charles Bran, but on further consideration, Bran found that Allan's play did not quite come up to the standard. Undaunted, Allan returned to his hotel determined to remedy the defects in his play. He also wrote to Alice that the outlook was encouraging. When this letter arrived at home, Alice's younger sister Grace, who had always wanted to become an actress, prevailed upon Alice to allow her to go to New York, and to New York she came, surprising Allan amidst his work. Grace pleaded to be allowed to try the leading part in the rewritten play. She studied the lines, and Allan was amazed at the ability which she displayed. The revised play was eventually accepted, and Grace was introduced to the manager and given a try-out. On opening night, she won success and fame for the play and for herself. Alice, back in their little hometown, waited in vain for news of her sweetheart and sister; gradually she learned the truth. A little later, having won success and wealth, Allan decided to pay a visit to his old home, accompanied by Grace. Noble-hearted Alice, realizing that she was forgotten and that her sister and her former sweetheart were entirely wrapped up in each other, determined to dress in the plainest possible manner to disturb their love.
