A Pair of Prodigals (1913)

Sandy and Shorty, two happy hobos, see a fisher-boy in the distance. They run toward him and induce him to trade his fishing-rod and bait-can for a silver medal. While they are digging for angle-worms in the woods, Sandy's shovel suddenly comes upon something hard and he unearths a treasure: a tin box full of banknotes. Sandy and Shorty divide the money. Deciding that they are fatigued, they lie down and go to sleep. Sandy dreams of ordering kegs and kegs of beer and of taking a bath in a tub-full of "suds." Shorty dreams of going to a gay restaurant and ordering everything on the menu. When they awake they feel for their money and are happy to find that they still have it. They start out arm-in-arm toward the town. On their way they meet a man who sells them an automobile. This takes all their money but one $20 bill, which Sandy cautiously holds back. This automobile is peculiar in many ways. Its gasoline tank is a beer keg; its hood is a half barrel, strapped down with a wide ribbon. The entire car is holstered up with whitewashed fence boards. Its windshield is a broken cellar window. It has a cow-catcher in front reinforced by a soft sofa cushion. Its lights are common oil house lamps. An alarm clock takes the place of an auto timepiece. The steps leading to the two little baby-chair stools for seats are ladder-like with four rungs. But this car can go. Sandy and Shorty speed all over town and have some hairbreadth escapes. When the car breaks down they pull and push it awhile until Shorty decides that it is hampered by surplus machinery, and proceeds to eliminate some. Then the car goes all right; it goes so well that it runs away with its two occupants, taking them right through a brick wall into the police court. The judge fines the two malefactors twenty dollars, but Sandy is not sorrowful. With the air of aristocratic boredom, he pushes his last $20 bill toward the judge, and with Shorty, walks haughtily from the courtroom. The last seen of the two happy hobos is when they are making time over the same old route on their way to other treasures.
