Berci wins a bicycle race at the school, beating the older boys. Berci lives with his grandfather, who is a kind of "factory peregrine" and his only passion is drinking. Berci finds it difficult to fit into his new school community. He only gets on with Kati Daru, who also longs to leave the town.
