The Fable of the Bachelor and the Back-Pedal (1915)

Once there was a bachelor who lived in a furnished room. He loved his Juliet and wanted to pay her board for life, so by rigid economy in six months he saved $28.00. He drew out the whole sum and told himself there was nothing too good for honey. He blew $25.00 for a ring and $3.00 for posies, then started up to the house to propose. Before he could pop the question her friend Isabelle dropped in. His Juliet then began bragging to Isabelle about some recent bargains. She brought out a coat which she said only cost $450.00, just like finding it, also a hat for $65.00 that was worth all of $75.00. She then produced a dozen articles and the price tags brought tears to the eyes of the bachelor. When the girls went out to take a peek at some articles that could not be brought into the parlor, the bachelor beat it, realizing that he would never have enough to keep her supplied in talcum powder.
