The New Member of the Life Saving Crew (1912)
Ruth Harding, the daughter of Captain Harding, of the Life Saving Station, is loved by George Thompson, the village postmaster. His affections are not returned as Ruth loves Henry Wilson, a young fisherman. Henry joins the crew under Ruth's father and George realizes that unless he can discredit Henry in some way all hope of his ever winning Ruth is gone. The opportunity soon comes in the person of his sister, who is visiting the village for the first time, and who is unknown to both Ruth and Henry. She is induced to go with her brother to the Life Saving Station as a visitor, and is introduced as such with a request that she he shown over the station. The captain delegates Henry to be her guide. Meantime, George has gone up the beach to the end of the surfman's patrol, and stationed himself with a kodak at a point which he and his sister had pre-arranged. After being shown over the station the sister requests Henry to show her the patrol. Arriving at the appointed spot her brother gives a signal and she falls into Henry's arms in a pretended faint. George quickly snaps his kodak and the damage is done. The girl quickly recovers and Henry soon forgets the incident. The following morning George puts the picture into an envelope and gives it to Ruth when she calls at the post office for the mail. He follows her and sees that it has the desired effect, i.e., a quarrel between the lovers. Henry, on duty in the watch tower, sees a figure clinging to an upturned boat at sea, and, having seen George last in oilskins, thinks it is he, but knowing of his treachery, he is tempted to rid himself of him by allowing him to drown. His manhood quickly asserts itself, however, and he gives the alarm. The life boat is launched and a rescue is made when Henry dives just as the figure sinks. Instead of his rival Henry has saved his sweetheart, who had gone rowing after their quarrel. The lovers are again united and when George's treachery is discovered he receives a good ducking at the hands of the crew. All Releases
