Two elderly intellectuals from St. Petersburg, a husband and wife, survived the Great Patriotic War as children. Now they live alone; their children have left. They possess wisdom, calm, optimism, patience, and forgiveness-things sorely lacking in modern people today. Therefore, those who are cold and in need of help and support are drawn to them, to their warmth and home, as to fire.
