'Logan' Finishes Jackman's Wolverine and Kick-Starts March
Update: Monday, 3/6/17: Looks like Logan had more in him on Sunday than Fox was guess-timating. Actuals have come in at $88.4 million this last weekend (was $85.3 million), with the film easing off of Saturday only 23% and a stellar $21,717 per screen average. So Fox's predicted $21.3 million Sunday take was actually $24.1 million. That puts the James Mangold picture in 4th place for the biggest R-rated opening weekends of all time, now ahead of The Hangover, Part II at $86 million in 2011, and just behind American Sniper with $89.2 million in 2015.—End Update
'Logan' Poised for Best Finish Over the Weekend
WEEKEND PREVIEW:The final, R-rated, impale-happy, Hugh Jackman-cussing Wolverine film, Logan hits 4,071 theaters this weekend and Fox's guidance is $60 million. The studio is pulling its punches (or adamantium claws) though as that means they think it's heading for $14.7K per screen average. In a weekend where its competition is the well-reviewed holdover Get Out, the Groundhog Day YA film, Before I Fall, and Lionsgate/Summit's faith-based film, The Shack, Logan's prospects seem better than that.
Get Out Earns $30.5 Million on Oscar Weekend
Blumhouse's Get Out, the Jordan Peele horror/comedy/social commentary, parlayed its glowing critical reception for a stunning $30.5 million Oscar weekend in 2,781 theaters and a very respectable $10,976 per-screen average. The other new films, Lionsgate/Summit's animated flick, Rock Dog, at $3.7 million, fell just outside of the top 10, while the critically-derided inanimate Collide, from Open Road, spun out at $1.53 million in 2,045 theaters for an abysmal $753 per theater.
'LEGO Batman' Tops Presidents' Day Weekend, 'Great Wall' Leads Newcomers
The LEGO Batman Movie topped the weekend box office for a second week in a row, holding off a trio of newcomers led by Universal's The Great Wall. Fellow new releases, Fist Fight and particularly Fox's A Cure for Wellness, fizzled in their respective debuts as the start of 2017's Presidents' Day weekend saw the top twelve come in 47% behind last year. While that was mostly to be expected, it's a rather significant dip as 2017 is currently pacing 10.4% behind 2016's yearly grosses.
'LEGO Batman' to Lead Presidents' Day Weekend Over 'Fist Fight', 'Great Wall' & 'Cure for Wellness'
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Universal's The Great Wall led the weekend's newcomers on Friday, bringing in an estimated $5.9 million on its way to what looks like a $17 million three-day and a four-day weekend that could top $20 million.
'LEGO Batman' Tops 'Fifty Shades Darker' & 'John Wick 2' With $55.6 Million
It was the best weekend at the 2017 box office so far, led by WB's The LEGO Batman Movie along with fellow newcomers Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter Two topping the box office in that order. But along with the new releases, five of the weekend's holdovers, especially Lion, held on extremely well, dropping 35% or less compared to last weekend. Overall the weekend top twelve came in just a fraction below our overall expectation of $180 million as the top twelve combined for an estimated $176.9 million. M. Night Shyamalan
'LEGO Batman', 'Fifty Shades Darker' & 'John Wick 2' Set to Light Up the Weekend Box Office
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Universal's Fifty Shades Darker led the way on Friday with an estimated $21.5 million, heading toward a three-day opening north of $46-50 million. Meanwhile, WB's The LEGO Batman Movie took in an estimated $15 million ($1.25m from IMAX showings) on Friday, which is a bit below expectation and is not looking as if it will be in a tight race with Fifty Shades, pulling in around $52+ million for the three day.
'Split' Threepeats Over Super Bowl Weekend as Newcomers Fumble
Not many surprises this Super Bowl weekend as Universal's Split finished #1 for a third straight weekend in a row while the new releases struggled out of the gates. Between the new releases, Paramount's Rings did manage a second place finish despite largely negative reviews while STX's The Space Between Us, floundered and finished well below expectations. Overall, the top twelve grossed an estimated $81.1 million, a bit below the $82 million the top twelve combined for over last Super Bowl weekend, though actuals could show a bump as studios could be playing it a bit conservative with Sunday estimates ahead of this evening's big game. M. Night Shyamalan
'Split' Looks to Fend Off 'Rings' and 'Space Between Us' Over Super Bowl Weekend
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Rings was able to just squeak by Universal's Split for a Friday victory, bringing in an estimated $5.6 million (including $800k from Thursday previews). The third film in the Rings franchise, however, will likely fall short of a weekend victory, delivering around $13 million or so while Split is looking at another #1 finish this weekend around $14.5 million or so after an estimated $4.8 million on Friday.
'Split' Dominates Newcomers in Second Weekend, Topping 'Dog's Purpose' and 'Resident Evil'
M. Night Shyamalan's Split dominated in its second weekend at the box office, dropping only 34% to take the #1 spot for a second weekend in a row. As a result, Universal held the #1 and #2 spots this weekend with Split and their release of Amblin and Walden Media's A Dog's Purpose, which topped the list of newcomers for a second place finish. Meanwhile, Screen Gems's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter didn't blow the doors off domestically, delivering the lowest domestic opening for any film in the franchise, but the combined worldwide gross for this latest installment pushed the global cume for the seven-film franchise over the $1 billion mark worldwide. Additionally, Oscar frontrunner La La Land jumped 43% after nominations earlier this weekend as its global total now tops $220 million and Hidden Figures climbs over $100 million domestically. M. Night Shyamalan
'Dog's Purpose' and 'Resident Evil' Open as Oscar Nominees Expand
SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Looking to hold on to the number one spot with ease, Universal's Split brought in an estimated $7.9 million on Friday and is looking at an impressive $25+ million second weekend.
Shyamalan's 'Split' Impresses with $40 Million Debut as 'Rogue One' Tops $1 Billion Worldwide
M. Night Shyamalan has delivered a second hit in a row as his latest film, Split, is estimated to have delivered a top five January opening, leading the weekend charge with a three-day opening four times as big as its reported $10 million budget. Meanwhile, Paramount's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage delivered as expected while the Weinstein's The Founder scored a top ten finish. Additionally, Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has become the 28th film to top $1 billion worldwide.
Shyamalan's 'Split' and Diesel's 'xXx 3' Look to Deliver $20+ Million Openings
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Universal's release of M. Night Shyamalan's Split delivered strong right out of the gates. Including an impressive $2 million in Thursday night previews, the thriller's Friday estimate is $14.6 million with the studio anticipating a $34.1 million opening weekend while other industry estimates peg it around $36-38 million. Opening day audiences scored it with a "B+" CinemaScore.
'Hidden Figures' Topples New Releases to Take MLK Weekend While 'Rogue One' Passes $500 Million
It wasn't necessarily an exciting Martin Luther King weekend, though it is rather astonishing to see how poorly all but one of the weekend's new and expanding wide releases performed. The weekend's successes find Hidden Figures leading the way for a second weekend, followed by Golden Globe juggernaut La La Land while it was STX's The Bye Bye Man that over performed against tracking and delivered the best new opening among the weekend's new and expanding releases, more than doubling the film's production budget over the four-day weekend.
'Hidden Figures' Poised to Top MLK Weekend Ahead of Several New & Expanding Releases
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: With an estimated $5.5 million on Friday Hidden Figures is leading the way. At this time industry expectations range from $18-20 million for the three-day with the four-day climbing anywhere from $22-28 million based on these early results.
2017 Kicks Off with Tight Race for #1 Between 'Rogue One' and 'Hidden Figures'
Domestic weekend estimates are in, but the full story won't be told until actuals arrive Monday afternoon as the top two films are within a mere fraction of one another as severe winter weather had a clear effect on this weekend's grosses. For the time being Rogue One: A Star Wars Story holds the top spot over Fox's expanded release of Hidden Figures by less than $200,000. The weekend's lone new wide release, Screen Gems's Underworld: Blood Wars, scored a fourth place finish while Focus's expansion of A Monster Calls failed to generate much interest despite strong reviews and audience response, ultimately finishing outside the top ten.
'Hidden Figures' & 'Underworld 5' Debut with 'Rogue One' Set for #1 Again
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: It is looking like a very close race at the top of the weekend box office as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is suffering a sharper drop than we expected, looking at a $23-24 million weekend while Universal's Sing is looking like it will hit around $23-25 million. Making things even more interesting is the performance of Fox's Hidden Figures, which may also have a shot at the #1 slot after bringing in an estimated $7.57 million on Friday, heading toward at least $21 million for the three-day weekend. However, with an "A+" CinemaScore word could spread quickly for Hidden Figures leaving Sunday's box office as the big question mark as to whether or not it will be able to surge above early projections.
'Rogue One' Tops New Years Weekend, Capping Off Disney's Monster 2016
With the coming of the new year we can now say 2016 was officially the largest year at the domestic box office of all-time as 725 films delivered over $11.3 billion, led by Finding Dory, one of several films that contributed to Disney's record year wherein the studio saw 16 films deliver over $3 billion in domestic revenue. As such, it's only fitting a Disney title ended the year as the #1 film at the weekend box office with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story taking the weekend crown for a third weekend in a row as its domestic total climbs to nearly $440 million after 18 days in release. We will have a complete look at both December as well as all of 2016 over the coming weeks, but for now let's take a quick look at this weekend's performances.
'Rogue One' Set to Close Out 2016 With Third Straight Weekend at #1
The final weekend of 2016 features no new wide releases, but should feature plenty of tickets sold across the country with most everyone getting an extended weekend off work and school. Just as last weekend saw Christmas Day fall on Sunday for the first time since 2011, this weekend sees New Year's Day fall on Sunday, which means we'll be looking closely at the same weekends from 2011 and 2005 for some inkling as to how this weekend's holdovers should perform. That said, look for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to finish at #1 yet again as it will soon become one of the top fifteen all-time films domestically, and from there is sure to pass Avengers: Age of Ultron's $459 million domestic gross for tenth place on the chart.
'Rogue One' to Top 'Sing', 'Passengers', 'Assassin's Creed' & Many More Over Christmas Weekend
FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Fox's Why Him? brought in $975,000 from Thursday previews in 2,380 locations. This compares to the $950,000 Office Christmas Party brought in from Thursday previews before opening with $16.8 million just a couple weekends ago. Sisters was also another R-rated December comedy, which debuted with $769,000 from Thursday previews and opened with $13.9 million. The difference between those two comparisons and Why Him? is neither was debuting over Christmas weekend. The R-rated comedy begins playing in 2,916 theaters tonight.
