DVD: 'Fahrenheit,' 'Aladdin,' 'Shawshank:' Get Busy Buying

In the same week that the all-star Shark Tale dominated the box office, the animated feature that popularized celebrity voice talent and pop culture references finally makes its DVD debut. Aladdin, starring the voice of Robin Williams as the genie, gets special edition treatment from Disney. Part of the studio's animation rebirth in the early '90s, the picture grossed $217.4 million in theaters to become the No. 1 movie of 1992. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, that would equal around $330 million today.

The Jawsfather

Watching Robert DeNiro spoof his Vito Corleone characterization in DreamWorks' Shark Tale isn't as much fun as it sounds, though the movie is no worse than the usual crop of computer-generated nonsense. It's all here: pop culture jokes with no bearing on the story, self-aware celebrity voiceovers, body function humor, colorful animation and a few good tunes.

Backflash

John Travolta as an earnest fire captain, Joaquin Phoenix as an idealistic fireman, Lewis Colick, who wrote the triumphant October Sky, and Jay Russell, who directed the charming My Dog Skip: with such top plot-oriented talent, what a wallop might have been packed into a movie about firemen.

Starting out as a typical—almost American—buddy road picture, The Motorcycle Diaries is that rare movie that keeps getting better as it travels along, showing the evolution of its characters into fully realized human beings.

Dawn of the Zom-Rom-Com

Zombies—they seem to be everywhere today. And among the current living dead trend, Shaun of the Dead is the very best. It's both a smart satire and a scary zombie movie in its own right. It's also something completely new at the same time—a romantic comedy with a horror twist.

Blanks Over Hollywood

Though it is based on a true story, accounted for in an article in The New Yorker, The Last Shot plays more like a misfired adaptation of Woody Allen's hilarious Bullets Over Broadway. That said, funny scenes are scattered throughout writer Jeff Nathanson's uneven directorial debut, which stars Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin.
