Mixed Meows in Star Catfight

If anyone can make watching Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez scratch at one another fun, it's director Robert Luketic, who directed the bright Legally Blonde and the light romantic comedy Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! His cheerful sensibilities lift the clunky Monster-in-Law higher than its vapid script deserves, but it is not enough.

Kid Soccer Pic's All Shtick

Anyone who has coached, parented or been a kid in sports will probably find something funny in the crude, physical comedy of Kicking and Screaming, but that's the best Will Ferrell's latest vehicle will net. Robert Duvall goes slumming as Ferrell's father, a geezer who's basically Mr. Duvall's Great Santini Marine grown old, while the usual assortment of outrageous half-characters round out the cast.

Around the World Roundup: 'Kingdom' Reaps $55M Bow

For movie exhibitors overseas, director Ridley Scott's Crusades epic was a slice of heaven after six straight weeks of poor returns.

NEW FEATURE: Image Galleries

Now you can view images from the movies in our new galleries. If a gallery is available for a particular movie, you can access it by going to that movie's page and clicking on the 'Images' tab. That takes you to an index of all available images, where you can click on individual images to view them full sized.

The Emperor's New Clones

The series that began with an idealistic farm boy's choice between complacency and a noble crusade, with classic Hollywood banter and conflict, ends in an orgiastic blur. Creator George Lucas made Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, the last installment of his epic Star Wars, more like a video game than a motion picture. With 90 computer-generated minutes—20 more than Attack of the Clones—sensory overloaded Sith fizzles in a blaze of gore.

'Kingdom' of Limbo, 'House' of Lax

The official start of the summer movie season was anything but epic, with overall business at $87 million—the lowest since 1999 for the first weekend of May. The box office slump continues, and Hollywood is praying that Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith revitalizes people's interest in moviegoing when it opens May 19. Crusades Epic Short on Drama

Kingdom of Heaven strives for high ideals, sidesteps the history of Christianity's Crusades and stumbles in telling a knight's tale. Like most of today's mindless epics, director Ridley Scott's (Gladiator) latest marathon is bloody, furious and largely bereft of drama.

Around the World Roundup: 'XXX' at a Lower Level

XXX: State of the Union was just as disappointing overseas as it was domestically, grossing $14.8 million from 50 countries over the weekend. However, the action sequel did face some hurdles. Europe's maiden heat wave kept many patrons away, especially in Germany, which was one of the first XXX's strongest markets. Furthermore, the Labor Day holiday celebrated in nearly every nation on Saturday kept many people home and, in some cases, closed down all movie theatres (e.g. Finland). There's a reason why the summer movie season starts on the first week of May, and distributor Sony found that out last weekend.

'Hitchhiker' Beams, 'XXX' Reamed

Hollywood tried to start the summer movie season early with two big budget spectacles, to no avail. Instead, the industry came up with a solid weekend in a time frame which is usually used as a dumping ground. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy blasted off as expected, but XXX: State of the Union stalled well below industry forecasts. Vin DieselIce Cube

Absurdist Sci-Fi Comedy Strictly for Literary Series' Fans

Thumbing its nose at everyone but fans of the book series upon which it is based, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy leaves the uninitiated—including this reviewer—stranded in outer space. Beginning with a bizarre sequence about dolphins and the end of the world, which is depicted with narration, animation and song, it is an inaudible, incomprehensible chaos, with a point that there is no point in having a point (which is its self-refuting point). Welcome to the universe of the absurd.

'Dynasty' Heirs Remember the Beginning

Before Alexis, the definitive television vixen of the 1980's, there was Dynasty, which, in its first season—recently released on DVD by Fox—was historic, cinematic and more substantive than many of today's top-rated soaps. Remembering a series derived from classic Hollywood melodramas, Box Office Mojo recently talked with the creator and stars of the show that dominated TV ratings in the '80s and made TV almost as glamorous as the movies.
