'Grindhouse' Dilapidated Over Easter Weekend

Grindhouse had a fawning barrage of media hype behind it and a seemingly built-in audience primed for its brand of nihilistic thrills, but Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez' attempt to revive 1970s schlock was mostly ignored over Easter weekend. Lasse HallströmPaul Verhoeven

'Streets of San Francisco' and 'Untouchables' on DVD

Burbank, California—Two serious crime dramas—both executive produced by Quinn Martin—provide another good reason to stay at home, away from the potty jokes, spurting blood and severed limbs in theaters and offer a strong dose of romanticism in premiere first season DVD sets available next week. Close-Up: Lasse Hallstrom on 'The Hoax'

While in town to work on his new Fox television pilot, New Amsterdam, about a New York City homicide cop who happens to be immortal, director Lasse Hallström took some time to discuss his latest motion picture, Miramax's The Hoax, starring Richard Gere. Bob Yari

Droll Humor Caps Con Man's Downfall

The Hoax, directed by Lasse Hallstrom and partly based on Clifford Irving's book about his infamous publishing swindle, is laden with too much information but it's amusing as a game of catch me if you can.

Around the World Roundup: 'Bean' Beams

Dislodging 300 from the foreign top spot over the weekend, Mr. Bean's Holiday counted $34.2 million from 26 territories for a $36.5 million early total.

'Blades' Takes Gold, 'Robinsons' Merits Silver

Two broad comedies, Blades of Glory and Meet the Robinsons, skated to the top of the box office as last weekend's releases slipped. After four up weekends in a row, overall business was down ten percent from the same time last year when Ice Age: The Meltdown opened to a spectacular $68 million. Will FerrellJon HederBen Stiller

'Wordplay,' 'Flyboys' and Disney Book Notes

Burbank, California—Catching up on missed movies, I recently watched Flicka, Flyboys, and Wordplay on DVD. The less said about the slow-moving, badly acted Flicka the better. The true story of America's first fighter pilots, Flyboys, is hokey but it soars in aerial dogfight scenes. Wordplay tops both across and down.

Manic Animation Numbs a Good Story

Anyone who can survive the sensory-overloaded first half of the hysterical Meet the Robinsons will probably find something to appreciate about the rest of this three-dimensional splurge. The latest digital cartoon—both the largest 3D and digital release ever—is frankly exasperating.

Around the World Roundup: '300' Conquers More Countries

Dominating the foreign box office, 300 posted $48.3 million from 33 markets over the weekend for a $79.6 million total. The computer-generated battle picture was unleashed in 20 new markets, conquering nearly all of them. Hugh GrantDrew Barrymore

'TMNT' Sees Green on Crowded Weekend

On one of the most crowded weekends in recent memory, six wide releases entered the fray and only one, TMNT, emerged a hit. Holdovers 300 and Wild Hogs continued to pack a wallop, and overall business soared 24 percent above the same weekend last year when Inside Man opened in first. Adam Sandler

Assassination Action Hampered by Slow-Moving Target

Shooter, an action thriller about an American military sniper implicated in an assassination plot, is sluggish and mildly interesting. Don't expect a tense, well-paced thriller with the zip of The Bourne Identity, but Shooter is satisfactory. Mark WahlbergDanny GloverAntoine Fuqua

Misguided Men Take Manhattan

The prominently featured rock soundtrack for Reign Over Me could have included the Beatles' "All You Need is Love," which expresses this picture's unobjectionable take on life. But it would have been too upbeat in a movie too content to writhe in agony. Mike BinderAdam SandlerDon CheadleLiv Tyler

Sports Tale Barely Beats the Buzzer

Though clichéd, flawed and predictable, the choppy sports drama Pride rallies for a smooth finish for those who like this sort of rah-rah movie (and I do). Bernie MacTom Arnold

Around the World Roundup: '300' Victorious

300 marched to the top of the foreign box office, generating $15.9 million from 13 markets over the weekend for a $25.2 million total. The digital battle picture continued to dominate Greece, down a mere 11 percent from its record-breaking opening. Its $2.7 million weekend from 112 prints was easily the largest second weekend ever, and its $7.2 million total doubles Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's tally at the same point.

'300' Bleeds But Leads

More than half its audience was hacked off from its opening, but 300 handily dominated the box office again and led overall business to a ten percent improvement over the same frame last year when V for Vendetta claimed the top spot. Sandra BullockChris Rock

Around the World Roundup: 2006 Review

While the domestic box office may not have been exciting in 2006, the foreign box office provided some thrills, with many pictures more than doubling what they did domestically. All told, four pictures from 2006 crossed the $300 million mark and 24 reached $100 million or more, compared to 2005's six $300 million-plus and 20 $100 million-plus movies. Ang LeeBen Stiller

'Pursuit of Happyness' and Betty Hutton

Burbank, California—One of last year's best pictures, The Pursuit of Happyness, premieres on DVD later this month and the disc is a keeper. The movie, fueled by Steve Conrad's strong script, dramatizes one parent's heartbreaking reach for the best within. Will SmithThandiwe Newton
