Weekend Report: 'Blind Side' Tackles Post-Thanksgiving Blahs

Though The Blind Side still packed a wallop, the movies as a whole saw a typical post-Thanksgiving slide over the weekend. However, due to the momentum from last weekend's record Thanksgiving gross, overall business was the highest the timeframe has ever seen (although not in terms of attendance), up 21 percent over the same period last year. Weekend Report: Fading ‘New Moon’ Eclipses ‘Twilight,’ ‘Blind Side’ Surges

The Twilight Saga: New Moon collapsed in its second weekend, as expected after the fan frenzy of its first weekend, but still narrowly led Thanksgiving weekend with $42.9 million for a whopping $230.9 million total in ten days. Due to the relatively modest new releases, the Top Three remained the same with the ascendant The Blind Side in second and descendant 2012 in third. All told, it was the highest-grossing Thanksgiving on record at around $186 million, although it wasn't nearly as special in terms of estimated attendance, ranking ninth. Weekend Report: ‘2012’ Plagues the Box Office

Weekend Report: Moviegoers Stingy with Scrooge

It was a miserly start to the Holiday movie season as the high profile movie positioned to bring the most cheer, A Christmas Carol (2009), stumbled a bit out of the gate. Overall weekend business was off 16 percent from the same timeframe last year, when Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa landed, and was on the low end for early November. Weekend Report: ‘Paranormal’ Rages, ‘Saw’ Dulls

As a new horror sensation rose, another fell over the weekend. Paranormal Activity rolled out into more theaters and claimed the top spot, in part because the new releases were non-starters, including the latest movie in the usually reliable Saw franchise. Overall business was down 14 percent from last year, which featured the one-two punch of High School Musical 3: Senior Year and Saw V, but was still solid for the timeframe.

End-of-Run Report: 'Star Trek,' 'Wolverine' Close

The summer's first two big movies, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Star Trek, officially ended their runs on Thursday, Oct. 1. That is to say, their distributors will no longer track them even though they might continue at a few theaters (Star Trek in particular).

Weekend Report: Moviegoers Feast on ‘Meatballs,’ Slim Pickings for ‘Jennifer’

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs landed with a sunny $30.3 million and led the weekend as a whole to a 14 percent bump over the same timeframe last year. The other new releases, however, weren't pretty, especially Jennifer's Body, which had an advertising campaign that made the mistake of going gaga for its hyped actress. ‘Ice Age 3’ Climbs to Lofty Foreign Milestone

On the foreign front, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has officially become the third highest-grossing movie of all time. The animated comedy edged out Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to rank behind Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Worldwide (which combines both foreign and domestic grosses), it currently stands at No. 18 on the all time chart, just shy of Finding Nemo, which it will soon surpass.
