Bankability Breakdown: Jennifer Lopez
This weekend marks the return of Jennifer Lopez to mainstream movies after a five-year hiatus. For a stretch that lasted from the late 1990s on through 2005, Ms. Lopez was arguably one of the most bankable actresses. That may sound strange today in light of her last theatrical release, El Cantante, making just $7.6 million in 2007, while another movie, Bordertown, went straight-to-video (not to mention the waning record sales of her music career). Perhaps contributing to a negative perception of her prior drawing power is the fact that she never starred in an intended blockbuster and none of her movies grossed more than $100 million (though three did adjusted for ticket price inflation). Around-the-World Roundup: 'Clash' Continues to Dominate

End-of-Run Report: 'Up in the Air,' 'When in Rome' Grounded
Two travel-themed pictures have reached their final destinations: Up in the Air exited with a high-flying $83.8 million, while When in Rome bowed out with $32.7 million. As usual with such closings, these pictures continued to play at a few theaters, but as far as their distributors are concerned, their box office is dead (even though a slight trickle persists). Weekend Report: 'Kick-Ass' Opens Up a Can of Weak Sauce
Kick-Ass didn't bust out of its unpopular superhero comedy confines nor did it match its hype, but it nonetheless delivered one of the highest-grossing starts ever for its sub-genre. Still, that may not have been enough to lead a weekend that saw How to Train Your Dragon spreading its wings further. With five pictures grossing $15-20 million, overall business was up 11 percent from the same timeframe last year, when 17 Again ruled. Tyler PerryChris RockMartin LawrenceTracy Morgan

Nevertheless, it posted a relatively solid estimated $7.6 million on approximately 4,300 screens at 3,065 locations. That figure, though, still includes preview grosses from Thursday night.
