Friday Report: 'Battle: Los Angeles' Invades

On Friday, Battle: Los Angeles marched into the top spot with the single biggest Friday haul of the year so far, while Red Riding Hood lacked bite and Mars Needs Moms was a massive flop. All three movies generally played out according to what their respective genres prescribed. Overall business was down again from last year, when Alice in Wonderland's reign continued. Seven-Day Summary: 'Rango,' 'Bureau' Lead Another Down Week

Rango had a solid if not altogether remarkable first week, and The Adjustment Bureau scored the best start for a Matt Damon headliner in years. On the other hand, Beastly mustered a moderate debut, Take Me Home Tonight flopped, and the rest of the field was expectedly quiet. As a result, overall box office was off 34 percent from last year, when Alice in Wonderland led with a whopping $146.6 million. That's the worst year-over-year decline so far in 2011, and it indicates that the industry may have at least a few more down weeks.Johnny DeppAlex PettyferVanessa HudgensBradley CooperRobert De Niro

Around-the-World Roundup: Oscar Bump Catapults 'Speech' Into Lead

Despite winning four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The King's Speech didn't experience any notable increase at the domestic box office this past weekend. It did, however, see a bit of an Oscar bump overseas, jumping 30 percent without any major new openings. That was good enough for first place ahead of new releases Rango and The Adjustment Bureau and foreign hit Black Swan. Overall business, though, wasn't as exciting as the same period last year, when Alice in Wonderland opened to $94 million. Colin FirthGeoffrey RushJohnny DeppMatt DamonEmily Blunt

Weekend Report: 'Rango' Moseys Into Top Spot

Though it's a Western about an ugly lizard, Rango was quite a draw over the weekend, and The Adjustment Bureau was no slouch either. While overall weekend business was off 32 percent from last year's Alice in Wonderland madness, it was up from the comparable weekends in 2009 and 2008. Friday Report: 'Rango' Wrangles Lead

Rango handily topped the box office on Friday, lassoing an estimated $9.8 million on approximately 5,200 screens at 3,917 locations. Though it grossed less than a quarter of Johnny Depp's Alice in Wonderland on the same Friday last year, it exceeded Depp's previous voice-only role, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride ($6.7 million). Rango's attendance was comparable to How to Train Your Dragon, but its gross was lower than that picture's 3D-enhanced $12.1 million. Distributor Paramount Pictures' initial exit polling indicated that the audience composition was 54 percent female and 54 percent aged 25 years and older. Matt DamonVanessa HudgensAlex Pettyfer

Seven-Day Summary: 'Hall Pass' Holds On to Top Soft Week

Hollywood executives can breathe a slight sigh of relief: Winter 2011 has finally come to its ignominious conclusion, with Hall Pass topping an otherwise uneventful week at the box office. Not too far behind was fellow Warner Bros. release Unknown and Disney/Touchstone animated hit Gnomeo and Juliet, while the week's other opener Drive Angry failed to shift out of first gear. Thanks to Hall Pass's middling result and Drive Angry's disastrous start, overall box office was off 11 percent from last year when Shutter Island led for the second week in a row. Box Office Woes Continued in February

In February, movie theaters racked up nearly $660 million in sales, dipping close to 13 percent from February 2010's $755 million haul. It was the lowest-grossing February since 2007, and it was the largest February-to-February slip since 1995. Adam Sandler

March 2011 Preview

While February wasn't quite as barren as January, it still failed to reverse 2011's downward trajectory. Things aren't looking much better in March: March 2010 scored a record $832.3 million, fueled in large part by Alice in Wonderland's huge $299.5 million. It's going to take above-average performances across the board, particularly from Rango, Battle: Los Angeles and Sucker Punch to come anywhere close to matching that total. Around-the-World Roundup: 'Number Four' Edges Out 'Swan'

While it fell short of first place domestically, I Am Number Fourinched past Black Swan to claim the top spot at the foreign box office over the weekend. The King's Speech had yet another strong showing, True Grit played decently in a few new territories, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader leveraged a solid opening in Japan to reach a much-anticipated milestone.

'Black Swan' Passes 'Narnia' as News Corp.'s Top 2010 Release

After earning $145,699 on Tuesday, Fox Searchlight's Black Swan has officially passed 20th Century Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to become parent company News Corp.'s highest-grossing movie from 2010. The last time a specialty division release topped anything from its bigger brother was in 2000, when Sony Classics' Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon surpassed Sony/Columbia's Charlie's Angels, while Miramax's Scary Movie bested Disney's Dinosaurs.Darren AronofskyNatalie PortmanDenzel Washington

Weekend Briefing: 'Hall Pass,' 'Drive Angry' Are Unleashed

Late February is typically a slow time at the box office, and this weekend doesn't appear to be an exception, lacking a Shutter Island like last year or a Tyler Perry movie to give it a kick in the pants. Two movies enter nationwide release: Hall Pass hits more than 3,400 screens at 2,950 locations, while Drive Angry grabs over 2,400 screens at 2,290 locations.
