Weekend Report: 'Ted' Gets High, 'Mike' Scores

After nearly two months of Summer movies targeted at younger audiences, this weekend served as a good reminder that adults like to go to the theater too. Seth MacFarlane's Ted scored one of the best R-rated comedy debuts ever, while R-rated male stripper flick Magic Mike proved to be a very attractive option. Even the latest PG-13 Tyler Perry movie, Madea's Witness Protection, had a strong opening propelled mainly by older African American women. Overall the Top 12 earned $196.9 million, which makes it the biggest aggregated weekend ever in the month of June.Mark WahlbergChanning TatumSteven SoderberghDenise RichardsWes AndersonChris PineElizabeth Banks

Friday Report: Crowds Go Wild for 'Ted,' 'Mike'

The lure of original movies won out at the box office on Friday, with Ted and Magic Mike drawing huge crowds to movie theaters. Brave held on decently as well, and Madea's Witness Protection performed in line with past Madea movies. As a result, four movies earned over $10 million on Friday, which appears to be the first time that's ever happened. Channing TatumSteven SoderberghChris PineElizabeth BanksWes Anderson

July 2012 Preview

July 2012 is finally here, and with it comes what is easily one of the most-anticipated movies ever. On July 20, audiences will pack their way in to theaters to see The Dark Knight Rises, which is the final installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Initial grosses from that movie, combined with revenue from The Amazing Spider-Man and Ice Age: Continental Drift, should make for one of the biggest months ever, though with only seven new releases it may be tough to beat July 2011's record-setting $1.4 billion. Heath Ledger

Forecast: 'Mike,' 'Ted' Try to Unseat Merida

Midnight Update: Ted and Magic Mike both got off to very strong starts at midnight. Ted earned $2.625 million from 1,090 locations, which is the third-highest midnight launch this Summer behind The Avengers and Prometheus. Seth MacFarlaneChanning TatumTyler PerryMark WahlbergMila Kunis

'The Avengers' Hits $600 Million

Sometime today, The Avengers will become the third movie ever to earn over $600 million at the domestic box office. It is reaching that milestone on its 54th day in theaters, which is a week longer than it took Avatar (47 days). Including its foreign gross, the movie's worldwide total now sits at an incredible $1.44 billion.

Forecast: Pixar Aims for 13th-Straight First Place Debut with 'Brave'

Coming off a somewhat quiet weekend, the box office should be revitalized a bit thanks to the release of Disney/Pixar's latest movie. Brave is set to open in a Pixar-record 4,164 locations, 2,790 of which will include 3D shows. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will also try to battle its way to solid grosses at 3,106 theaters (2,497 with 3D), but its target demographic is too narrow for it to really break out. Meanwhile, Focus Features is releasing apocalyptic comedy/drama Seeking a Friend for the End of the World at 1,618 venues, while To Rome with Love, Woody Allen's follow-up to Midnight in Paris, launches in a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Weekend Report: Circus Afros Beat 80s Hairdos

Initial box office results for Rock of Ages and That's My Boy seem to confirm two very important things: the 1980s was a lousy decade, and starpower is a bit overrated. Tom CruiseAdam SandlerWes Anderson

Around-the-World Roundup: 'Madagascar 3' Hangs On to Foreign Lead

Even without any major openings, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted held well and claimed the top spot at the overseas box office for the second-straight weekend. Will Smith

Friday Report: 'Madagascar 3' Holds Off Weak Openers

Newcomers Rock of Ages and That's My Boy had a rough time on Friday, which allowed Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted to easily retain the top spot at the box office. The animated three-quel fell 52 percent to an estimated $10.03 million, which brings its eight-day total to a very solid $95 million. That total is a bit ahead of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa's $90.04 million, though the gap will probably begin to narrow once Brave debuts next Friday. Madagascar 3 should wind up with around $33 million for the three-day frame.Adam SandlerWill SmithWes Anderson

Forecast: Cruise, Sandler Indulge in 80s Nostalgia This Weekend

The box office gets a heavy dose of 80s nostalgia this weekend thanks to musical Rock of Ages, which utilizes 80s rock tunes for all of its songs, and R-rated comedy That's My Boy, which finds Adam Sandler sporting an 80s mullet. This isn't the first time that a June weekend has harkened back to that decade: in 2010, The Karate Kid remake and The A-Team adaptation opened to a combined $81 million. There's virtually no chance that Rock of Ages and That's My Boy deliver a similar result, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted will likely hold on to first place.

Around-the-World: 'Madagascar 3' Skips Europe, Wins Overseas Anyway

Due to competition from the Euro Cup, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted largely avoided opening in Europe, though it still took the top spot at the foreign box office this weekend with a strong $77.3 million haul. Ridley Scott

Weekend Report: 'Madagascar' Breaks Out, 'Prometheus' Catches Fire

What looked like a tight race on Friday turned out to not really be much of a competition, as Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted handily defeated Prometheus over the three-day weekend. That being said, even if it didn't quite reach the astronomical levels some had been expecting, director Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi still had one of the best second place debuts in history. The Top 12 earned $174.2 million this weekend, which is up 32 percent from the same frame last year when Super 8 and Judy Moody both underperformed. Chris RockWoody AllenWes Anderson

Friday Report: 'Prometheus,' 'Madagascar 3' in Close Race

Prometheus narrowly topped the box office on Friday, though with family-friendly days ahead Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted seems well-positioned to take the weekend prize. Both movies opened very strong, though, and are each headed to at least $50 million for the three-day frame.Ridley Scott

Forecast: 'Prometheus,' 'Madagascar 3' Go Head-to-Head This Weekend

Midnight Update: Prometheus earned a very impressive $3.56 million from midnight showings at 1,368 theaters. That's seven times as high as Super 8's $500,000 on the same weekend last year, and also higher than Inception's $3 million midnight start in Summer 2010. It's also more than twice the recent midnight debuts of MIB 3 ($1.55 million) and Snow White and the Huntsman ($1.38 million). Both of those movies wound up with over $50 million for the weekend, and there's now a very good chance Prometheus ends up with at least that much.Ridley ScottJames CameronChristopher NolanLeonardo DiCaprio

June Preview (Part 2): 'Brave,' 'Abraham Lincoln,' 'Ted' & More

The last two weekends of June 2012 are also the most crowded so far this Summer: there are a total of seven nationwide releases on the schedule, which is as many as there were throughout the entire month of May. Disney/Pixar's Brave is the only certain hit, though Ted should also be a strong contender, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter continues to look like it's going to have a tough time attracting attention. Around-the-World Roundup: 'MIB 3' Leads Again, 'Prometheus' Opens Strong

MIB 3 held well in a few of its major markets and wound up in first place once again at the overseas box office. Meanwhile, Snow White and the Huntsman did solid business in its debut, while Prometheus put up some strong numbers a week ahead of its U.S. opening.Ridley ScottMartin Scorsese

Weekend Report: 'Snow White' Takes Big Bite Out of Box Office Apple

Any worry that Snow White and the Huntsman would only appeal to young girls wound up being completely unfounded—the revisionist fairy tale played well across all demographics, and easily claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend. MIB 3 and The Avengers did fine business in second and third, while Mexican historical drama For Greater Glory wasn't all that great in its nationwide release. The Top 12 earned $134.6 million this weekend, which is off 12 percent from the same period last year.
