Weekend Report: 'Gatsby' Great, But 'Iron Man' Leads Again

Thanks to a vibrant marketing effort and a complete lack of competition for female audiences, The Great Gatsby opened to an excellent $50.1 million over Mother's Day weekend. However, that wasn't enough to claim first place from Iron Man 3, which followed up its record-breaking debut with another very strong outing. Forecast: 'Gatsby' Poised for 'Great' Second Place Opening

Saturday AM Update: The Great Gatsby opened to an excellent $19.4 million on Friday, which puts the movie on pace for at least $50 million for the weekend. Iron Man 3 still took first place, though, with $19.8 million, which is off a rough 71 percent from last Friday. In comparison, The Avengers only fell 64 percent at the same point. Finally, Tyler Perry Presents Peeples bombed with $1.19 million, and is on pace for just over $3 million for the weekend.Tyler PerryBaz LuhrmannLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittRussell Crowe

Weekend Report: 'Iron Man 3' Takes Off with Second-Highest Opening Ever

Kicking off the Summer movie season this weekend, Iron Man 3 lived up to sky-high expectations with $174.1 million haul. That ranks second all-time behind last year's The Avengers ($207.4 million), and is way up on the previous Iron Man outings. The movie also continues to do phenomenal business overseas, and is on its way to earning well over $1 billion worldwide.Michael BayTom Cruise

Forecast: 'Iron Man 3' in Line for One of the Biggest Openings Ever

Saturday Update: Iron Man 3 debuted to a massive $68.31 million on Friday, which ranks eighth all-time for opening day. It was noticeably behind The Avengers ($80.8 million), but was also way up on Iron Man 2 ($51.2 million). If it plays like those movies for the rest of the weekend, it will wind up with a weekend gross between $170 and $175 million, which will rank second all-time (behind The Avengers).

May 2013 Preview

While the actual Summer season doesn't officially begin until late-June, the Summer movie season historically kicks off in the month of May. As usual, the studios have jam-packed the slate with would-be blockbusters, though the schedule is particularly competitive this year: no fewer than four movies are sequels to $200 million domestic grossers, which means all of these titles come with insanely high expectations.

Forecast: 'Pain and Gain' to Flex Modest Box Office Muscles

A week ahead of Iron Man 3's debut—and the launch of the Summer movie season—two comparatively modest movies are opening nationwide this weekend. On the strength of its star power and energetic marketing, Pain and Gain should wind up close to $20 million, while The Big Wedding is poised for about half as much. Weekend Report: Tom Cruise Back on Top with 'Oblivion'

As the only brand-new movie in nationwide release, sci-fi adventure Oblivion easily took first place with $37.05 million. Unfortunately, overall box office was down 19 percent from the same frame last year, and it now appears that April 2013 will wind up about even with April 2012.Tom CruiseDerek CianfranceRob Zombie

Forecast: 'Oblivion' Gets Jump on Summer Season This Weekend

As the Summer movie season quickly approaches, the studios are only releasing one brand-new movie—Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Oblivion—in to theaters nationwide this weekend. While strong word-of-mouth will keep 42 in play, Oblivion has enough going for it that it should open on top with at least $30 million, which will be the highest opening weekend in April 2013.Morgan FreemanRyan GoslingBradley CooperRob Zombie

Weekend Report: '42' Called Up to Box Office Big Leagues

Jackie Robinson biopic 42 got off to a very strong start this weekend, while Scary Movie 5 wound up opening even lower than already-low expectations. The Top 12 earned $108.8 million, which was slightly up from the same weekend last year.

Friday Report: '42' Scores, 'Scary Movie 5' Bombs

42 scored the best opening day ever for a baseball movie, while Scary Movie 5 showed some franchises are better left dead.

Forecast: '42' Goes to Bat Against 'Scary Movie 5'

This weekend, Jackie Robinson biopic 42 faces off against the fifth installment in the long-dormant Scary Movie franchise, with both titles targeting around $20 million. Around-the-World: 'G.I. Joe' Nears Predecessor, 'Croods' Passes $200M

G.I. Joe: Retaliation held on to first place at the overseas box office this weekend with an estimated $40.2 million. Through less than two weeks, it's earned $145.2 million, and it will pass predecessor Rise of Cobra's $152 million total by mid-week.

Weekend Report: Audiences Thrill to 'Evil Dead,' 'Jurassic Park 3D'

Moviegoers eager for some old-fashioned thrills turned out in solid numbers this weekend for the Evil Dead remake and the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park 3D. Add in good performances from holdovers, and this was one of the stronger weekends of 2013 so far: the Top 12 earned $126.8 million, which is up nine percent from the same frame last year.Sam RaimiDanny Boyle

March Not Strong Enough to Salvage First Quarter of 2013

Coming off a truly terrible February, the box office rebounded a bit in March. Total domestic grosses came in around $828 million, which makes it only the third March ever to amass over $800 million. Still, it was off 12 percent from last March's record—that drop can be entirely accounted for with The Hunger Games effect—and year-to-date box office remains down 12 percent.Steve CarellJim CarreyTina FeyPaul Rudd

Forecast: 'Evil Dead,' 'Jurassic 3D' To Terrorize Audiences This Weekend

Midnight Update: The Evil Dead remake earned an estimated $1.8 million from 10 p.m. and midnight showings last night. In comparison, 2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street remake earned $1.6 million at midnight and went on to open to $32.9 million. With the inclusion of 10 p.m. shows, it's likely that Evil Dead is a little bit more front-loaded, though it's now guaranteed to open north of $20 million for the weekend.

April 2013 Preview

Coming off an underwhelming first quarter at the domestic box office, it's unlikely that April 2013 will do much to turn things around. With only seven new nationwide releases—one of which is a 3D re-release—the major studios are mostly avoiding April, and that should translate to moderate grosses. April 2011, which had 13 nationwide debuts, holds the April record with $793 million, which is a figure that's completely out of reach for the upcoming month.Tom CruiseMorgan FreemanMichael BayMark WahlbergDwayne JohnsonKatherine HeiglRobert De NiroAmanda SeyfriedRobin Williams
