Around-the-World Roundup: 'Taken 3' Adds $40 Million, 'Hobbit' Passes 'Guardians'
After opening successfully in two territories last weekend, Taken 3 expanded to another 33 markets and earned $40 million this weekend.

The final installment in the Taken franchise opened to a very strong $10.5 million in the U.K., and also put up good numbers in Australia ($4.9 million) and Germany ($4 million). The movie has already earned $51.2 million overseas, and has plenty of major markets still to open (including Russia and Spain next weekend).

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb opened last Sunday in China, and has so far earned $26.7 million there. Over the traditional weekend, it debuted to $6.1 million in Russia. To date, the third and final entry in the Night at the Museum franchise has earned $147 million, and is set to expand in to South Korea next weekend.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies added $21.1 million overseas this weekend, which brings its total to $545.1 million. On a worldwide basis, the movie has now grossed $782 million; that ranks second among 2014 releases ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy but behind Transformers: Age of Extinction.

It's likely that The Hobbit's existing markets (including the U.S.) get the movie to around $850 million worldwide. In order for it to ultimately reach $1 billion, it's going to need a huge showing in China, where it opens two weeks from now. The Desolation of Smaug earned around $75 million there; The Battle of Five Armies will probably need to double that. It's not impossible, though it's not a foregone conclusion, either.

Exodus: Gods and Kings took in $14.7 million this weekend, which brings its total to $166.9 million. Meanwhile, Big Hero 6 added $12.6 million for a new total of $194.5 million.
