Big Thursday for ‘Transformers’ Sequel
On Thursday, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen continued to dominate with a $28.6 million haul at 4,234 sites, lifting its total to $89.2 million in two days. It was the highest-grossing non-opening Thursday ever. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, The Matrix Reloaded and Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones each had bigger Thursdays, but those were opening days.

Revenge of the Fallen retreated 53 percent from Wednesday to Thursday, which was a typical drop for such a massive mid-week, non-holiday opening. It was also a smaller fall than Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was off 58 percent at the same point.

The first Transformers made a bit more on its second day, $29.1 million, but that was on an Independence Day Wednesday, and its first Thursday came in at $19.2 million for a three-and-a-half day tally of $84.9 million.

Included in Revenge of the Fallen's gross was a record launch in IMAX: 169 sites. On Wednesday, IMAX accounted for $4 million of the $60.6 million haul, and, on Thursday, it made up $2.3 million of the $28.6 million haul. All told, IMAX has had a seven percent share of the gross.

On the foreign front, Revenge of the Fallen has grossed over $80 million from more than 43 territories. Over the weekend, it opened in first in the United Kingdom ($13.8 million) and second in Japan ($5.8 million), though neither start was anywhere near record-breaking. On Wednesday, the rest of the countries followed, and the movie tallied $35 million for that day, followed by $20.7 million on Thursday (though France hadn't yet reported Thursday as of this writing).
