'Spider-Man' Spins Onto Music Sales Chart

Spider-Man is spinning on quite a few CD players. According to figures from SoundScan, the soundtrack to the record-shattering Marvel Comics adaptation sold 112,200 copies in its first week, bowing at No. 4 on the album sales chart.

Featuring such artists as The Strokes, Macy Gray, Pete Yorn and Aerosmith doing a cover of the original Spider-Man theme as well as some cuts from Danny Elfman's score, the soundtrack's sales were further buoyed by the first single, "Hero" by Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, which has been prominently featured in ads for the movie.

Spidey's debut tops that of the Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones soundtrack's last week. Attack of the Clones launched in sixth place 73,000, just 42% of the 173,000 copies The Phantom Menace sold its first week out two years ago.

This week, Attack of the Clones falls nine places to No. 15, also trailing the soundtracks to The Scorpion King at No. 13 and the perennial O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which sits at No. 10 in its 71st week on sales of 57,075 for a grand total of 5.1 million.

The overall sales top spot was taken by the bow of rap duo Big Tymers' "Hood Rich," moving 160,450 units. That was slightly less than the 187,000 start of their last album "I Got That Work," which landed in the No. 3 spot in June 2000.

R&B singer Ashanti held onto second place, selling another 127,525 copies of her self-titled debut. In just five weeks, its total has climbed to 1.2 million. Last week's No. 1, country singer Kenny Chesney's "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems," tumbled 47% to 125,000 and third place, lifting his two-week tally to 360,000.

Spurred by the hit single "A Thousand Miles" and a $3.50 rebate for its first two weeks, newcomer Vanessa Carlton's "Be Not Nobody" bowed in fifth place on sales of 101,750.

Other debuts on the chart included rapper Ali's "Heavy Starch" at No. 24, the eponymous debut of Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio at No. 45, Blackalicious' "Blazing Arrow" at No. 49 and C-Murder's "Tru Dawgs" at No. 67.

Still riding high from his exposure on 20/20 and Ally McBeal, classically trained singer Josh Groban enjoyed a 32% bump-up to 71,000 for his self-titled debut. Other notable sales gainers included Bonnie Raitt's "Silver Lining," up 18% and 10 places to No. 17, and Norah Jones' Blue Note debut "Come Away With Me," which surged 21% and bounces back to No. 37 from No. 46.

Off 44% from their career-best 55,000 debut, Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" slid from No. 13 to No. 34 on sales of 31,000. But with 86,000 in the till to date, the album has already sold more than half as many copies as the 166,000 haul of their last album, 1999's "Summerteeth."
