More Than 380 Duke it Out at Box Office Derby Debut
HOLLYWOOD (Box Office Mojo) - A whopping 380 valid entries were received for kickoff of the new Box Office Derby game from Box Office Mojo. This weekend was tough to predict, with the top honors going to Jason Kaplan of Boston, MA with an average accuracy of 84.51%. Jason correctly predicted Blade 2 would lead the box office this weekend with his 32.1 million prediction (98.72% accurate). Only 87 other players correctly put Blade 2 in the #1 slot.

Special kudos goes to Samuel Tolliver of Madisonville, KY and JAyala/02 of Stockton, CA for a 100% accurate prediction of Blade 2 at 32.5 million.

This week 93% of players were bullish on the re-release of E.T., with an average prediction of 23.4 million, compared to an actual of 14.2 million. Please send some Reese's Pieces to Juan in Madrid, who was the only player to predict this opening 100%.

Some of you sent us interesting comments with your predictions. With a 69% accuracy rating, Jason Cross of Columbus, OH writes: "I have never predicted box office grosses before. Here's hoping I have ESP." Sorry Jason, not this weekend! Charlie Hall of Barcelona writes: "I don't have a clue." He's right. He scored 63%. Chu of Pahang, Malaysia wrote: "Please also let non-US residents to win in the game." We won't discriminate on the basis residency, but we will against his 58% accuracy rating. Larry Salzman of La Mesa, CA writes with his 72% accurate prediction: "Why do they call it Ovaltine? The can's round—they should call it Roundtine." We're still trying to figure out what this has to do with his predictions.

Other players wrote more insightful comments. Ranking 18 overall with nearly 80% accuracy Scott Schachter of New York writes: "I think that Blade 2 will open well even though many think it won't." Alex Young of Arcadia, CA shared uncertainty with most of our players about E.T.'s performance: "I am the most unsure about my E.T. prediction, as it can lie anywhere between 15 to 35 million." He should have gone with 15 million as that would have brought his overall accuracy up to 88% and would have emerged as the clear winner for the week (though he still holds strong at #6). At #4 this week, Brett Aurit of Minneapolis, MN called it when he wrote: "Maybe I'm crazy, but I think everyone is under-predicting how well Blade 2 will do this weekend. People really liked the first one and the previews make it look really interesting."

Many players wondered why 40 Days and 40 Nights was not among the ten choices, as Lord of the Rings was expected to be #11, and 40 Days #10. Most of the time the expected top 10 are selected, but occasionally may stray because of mass interest in a particular movie (like Rings).

Finally, player Superman 234 writes: "I think this game looks like a lot of fun." We hope so! Feel free to send feedback to derbygame@boxofficemojo.com.

Be sure to play again this week as we will be keeping a running total of player scores. Each week you play you earn accuracy points; the more you play the more points you will accumulate! Please see our official rules for complete rules and scoring methods.
