Friday Report: DreamWorks Animation's 'Home' Rules with $15.6 Million
DreamWorks Animation's Home (2015) got off to a fantastic start on Friday, and is shaping up to be a nice win for the struggling animation studio. Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard was no slouch either.

Ultimately, both movies are poised to open north of $35 million this weekend, which is a rare occurrence at the domestic box office.

Home opened to an estimated $15.6 million, which is nearly twice as much as Mr. Peabody & Sherman's $8 million debut around this same time last year. It's also well above the first How to Train Your Dragon ($12.1 million), and last year's Rio 2 ($12 million).

If it follows Mr. Peabody's pace, it will wind up with over $60 million this weekend. More modestly, the How to Train Your Dragon pace translates to around $55 million.

Playing at 3,175 locations, Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard opened to a strong $12.9 million on Friday. While that's a bit lower than Hart's Ride Along ($14.4 million), it's in line with some of Ferrell's top movies like Blades of Glory ($12.4 million) and The Other Guys ($13.1 million). For the weekend, Get Hard is poised to bank at least $35 million.

Coming off its opening weekend, The Divergent Series: Insurgent plummeted 68 percent to an estimated $6.85 million. In comparison, the first Divergent movie dropped 64 percent at the same point. So far, Insurgent has grossed $71.2 million (down seven percent from the first movie).

Cinderella fell 50 percent to an estimated $4.7 million on Friday. Through 15 days, the Disney fantasy has earned $137.2 million total.

Indie horror movie It Follows expanded to 1,218 locations and took fifth place with an estimated $1.41 million. For a movie relying almost entirely on word-of-mouth and critical praise, that's a pretty solid result. For the weekend, It Follows should wind up with over $4 million.

Weekend Projections

1. Home - $56 million

2. Get Hard - $36 million

3. Insurgent - $21.5 million

4. Cinderella - $18 million

5. It Follows - $4.2 million
