MUSIC: 'Nellyville's Population Grows to Over 1 Million
"Nellyville" continued to heat up the charts for the week ending July 7, though there have been no reports of ladies getting undressed to the album as the hit single "Hot in Herre" commands.
Rapper Nelly's sophomore disc dipped 37%, selling 447,175 copies, according to tracker SoundScan. Its two-week tally has risen to 1,161,290, or about an eighth of the 9 million units that his first album "Country Grammar" sold.
"The Eminem Show" clung to the No. 2 spot, easing 15% to sales of 263,100 copies. Total sales climbed to 3.89 million, or about 45% of the 8.7 million the rapper's previous album "The Marshall Mathers LP" sold. At this rate, Eminem's latest should exceed the 4.8 million units of 2001's top seller Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory," although the "Show" may not go on to top the 7.3 million lifetime tally of that album.
All star compilation "Irv Gotti Presents... The Inc." featuring Ja Rule and Ashanti debuted at No. 3 on sales of 192,725 units. Speaking of Ashanti, her eponymous debut sold another 86,050 units at No. 6 to push its total past the 2 million unit milestone after 14 weeks on the chart.
Aerosmith's two-disc set "O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits" sold 136,875 copies to bow at No. 4. The band's last album of original material "Just Push Play" sold 240,000 copies out of the gate in March 2001.
Teenaged Canadian singer Avril Lavigne's debut disc "Let Go" enjoyed the highest gains for the week, up 12,450 units to 125,375 copies. After five weeks, 458,075 units have been sold.
Among other debuts, Oasis tried to invade America again with "Heathen Chemistry," but could only muster sales of 37,675 copies at No. 23. Green Day's "Shenanigans" landed at No. 27, while Chicago's "The Very Best of: Only the Beginning" compilation came in at No. 38.
At No. 12, Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" was the top selling soundtrack of the week again, while perennial "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" followed at No. 17 in its 80th week.
The soundtrack to "Like Mike" bow-wowed at No. 18 on sales of 44,100, while "Mr. Deeds" leapt from No. 100 to No. 61, benefiting from the Dave Matthews Band single "Where Are You Going. The group's new album "Busted Stuff" hits stores on July 16.
