Seven-Day Summary: 'True Grit' Gains More Ground on 'Fockers'
After narrowly missing the top spot last week, True Grit handily captured first place from Little Fockers this week. Newcomers Season of the Witch and Country Strong were underwhelming, and holdovers Black Swan and Tron Legacy beat both of them from Monday to Thursday. With no movie clearing $20 million for the period, overall business was down 31 percent from last year when Avatar dominated with $69.9 million.
True Grit fell 40 percent to $19.8 million for a total of $115.2 million. On Wednesday, it passed Wild Wild West to become the second highest-grossing Western on record. It would take a miracle, though, for the Coen Bros. remake to overcome Dances with Wolves, which is the top-grossing Western ever with $184.2 million (or nearly $350 million adjusted for ticket price inflation).
Little Fockers plummeted 49 percent to $16.9 million, or less than half of what predecessor Meet the Fockers made on the same week six years ago. With a total of $127.1 million, the new Fockers currently trails the old Fockers by nearly $85 million.
Season of the Witch debuted in third place with $13.5 million. It was relatively front-loaded, though, as it occupied fourth place on Monday and Tuesday and seventh place on Wednesday and Thursday. Witch's opening was an improvement over star Nicolas Cage's Bangkok Dangerous and Next, though it was about even with The Wicker Man.
Tron Legacy fell 49 percent to $13.1 million for a four-week total of $151.2 million. While it's obviously no Avatar, Legacy has drastically out-performed the original Tron and is at least middle of the road compared to its similar movies.
Black Swan moved up a spot to fifth place this week, easing just 17 percent to $11.8 million. From Monday through Thursday, Black Swan actually placed second behind True Grit, indicating that it is continuing to consistently draw in curious adult audiences. The Darren Aronofsky-directed ballet thriller will aim to substantially expand on its $64.9 million total when it moves in to 2,328 locations this weekend.
Another major awards contender, The Fighter, fell 32 percent to $9.8 million. With its $60.6 million haul, it will pass Cinderella Man sometime today to become the seventh highest-grossing boxing movie behind the Rocky series and Million Dollar Baby.
After playing in two locations since Dec. 22, Country Strong expanded to 1,424 theaters this week but managed $9.5 million. While this was higher than any of Crazy Heart's weekly grosses, that movie had a completely different release pattern, and Country Strong will require serious longevity to reach Crazy Heart's $39.5 million total.
The King's Speech dipped 20 percent to $9 million. With its media blitz in full effect right now, it's doubling its theater count this weekend in an effort to quickly build on its $35.5 million total.
