'Maleficent' and 'Zombieland' Deliver a Double Dose of Sequels this Weekend
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is on its way to a #1 finish, albeit a bit lighter than expected. The film brought in an estimated $12.5 million on Friday and is looking at a three-day performance around $38+ million. It received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Meanwhile, Zombieland: Double Tap is outperforming our forecast, but not to anyone's surprise. The film brought in an estimated $10.5 million on Friday and is expected to deliver a $27+ million three-day performance. Opening day audiences gave the film a "B+" CinemaScore.

You can check out all of the Friday estimates right here and we'll be back tomorrow morning with a complete look at the weekend.

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Sony's Zombieland: Double Tap kicked off its weekend with $2.85 million from Thursday night preview showings beginning at 7PM in 3,052 locations. The performance is just ahead of the preview showings from the likes of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Escape Room and Pet Sematary all of which brought in just over $2.3 million in previews earlier this year.

Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil brought in $2.3 million from Thursday previews last night, coming in a shade below the $2.6 million brought in by Dumbo ahead of its $45.9 million opening earlier this year.

We'll take a closer look at things tomorrow morning once Friday estimates come in. For now you can check out our weekend preview below.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A pair of sequels hit theaters this weekend in Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Sony's Zombieland: Double Tap, the latter arriving in theaters ten years after the original. Both will earn spots in the top three, though sandwiched between them will be WB's Joker, which looks to continue its strong run and potentially top $250 million domestically by the end of the weekend. At the same time, still in limited release, Neon's Parasite is adding 30 locations and may find its way into the top ten if it can maintain momentum from last weekend.

Looking at what will be its seventh #1 opening of the year, Disney will debut Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in over 3,700 locations. The film, which finds Angelina Jolie reprising the title role, arrives five years after the original opened with nearly $70 million and went on to gross over $758 million worldwide. However, the appetite for the sequel doesn't appear to be nearly on par with the 2014 original with the studio anticipating a debut in the mid-$40 millions, which is right around what we're expecting, though IMDb page views suggest that might even be too high.

A look at every comp we threw up against it, Mistress of Evil is pacing behind them all. This includes the likes of Dumbo, A Wrinkle in Time and Alice Through the Looking Glass. In fact, the picture IMDb page view comps paints is similar to what we were seeing prior to the launch of Gemini Man last weekend as it too lagged behind comp titles. This isn't to say Maleficent 2 is looking at a debut similar to Gemini, or even below $30 million, but it does suggest a performance closer to $40 million than $45 million may be more likely at this point. In addition to its domestic launch, Maleficent will launch in all major territories this weekend.

In the runner-up position, look for Joker to dip around -42% or so for a $32 million three-day. Should that forecast hold the film is looking to potentially top $250 million by the end of the weekend, which would push it ahead of Justice League and just shy of Batman as the ninth largest DC Comics adaptation of all-time domestically.

Sony's Zombieland: Double Tap will debut in 3,468 theaters this weekend with the studio anticipating a $23 million debut, which is right on par with our expectations, though we are seeing signals it could pop a bit higher. Arriving ten years after the original film, which delivered a 3x multiplier following a $24.76 million debut, this one looks to serve not only the horror audience, but crowds looking for an R-rated comedy following the release of Good Boys, which debuted eight weeks ago.

A look at IMDb page view performance shows Double Tap vastly outperforming June's Child's Play as well as August's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It's placing very similarly to April's Pet Sematary remake, which itself opened with $24.5 million and is well ahead of July's Crawl. Overall, we're optimistic when it comes to this one, forecasting a performance on par with the studio's expectations, looking for a $23 million opening with plenty of potential to go a bit higher.

UAR's The Addams Family delivered an opening on the higher end of industry expectations last weekend and should maintain well this weekend and thru Halloween next week. Right now we're looking at a -41% drop and a $18 million three-day for a domestic cume topping $58 million by the end of the weekend. It will be interesting to see if that forecast holds as films in the Hotel Transylvania franchise have enjoyed strong second weekend performances, the first two dropping -36.4% and -31.5% respectively, both of which opened larger than Addams Family and we wouldn't be surprised if this one follows suit.

Rounding out the top five is Paramount's Gemini Man, which had a soft debut last weekend and we expect to dip around -49% this weekend for a three-day around $10+ million for a domestic cume topping $38 million.

Elsewhere, Neon's Parasite enjoyed an excellent opening last weekend and expands to 33 locations (+30) this weekend. We don't have a forecast for the film, but there is a possibility it makes a run at the top ten despite playing in so few theaters.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight will debut Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit in five locations while Freestyle's Immortal Hero opens in nine theaters.

This weekend's forecast is directly below. This post will be updated on Friday morning with Thursday night preview results followed by Friday estimates on Saturday morning, and a complete weekend recap on Sunday morning.
