The Smurfs added $25.1 million from 71 markets. It had a handful of smaller openings throughout the Middle East, Asia and Scandinavia. Its top new territory was the United Arab Emirates, where it debuted to a huge $1.8 million. The movie's foreign total reached $297.7 million, bringing its worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total to $431.4 million.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes scored $20.2 million from 51 markets, including a strong $5.1 million debut in Mexico. It also held extremely well in Brazil (down 30 percent to $2.7 million) and France (off 29 percent to $2.5 million). The prequel's overseas total reached $186.3 million, and, on Sunday, it passed the Planet of the Apes remake's $182.2 million (though it obviously still lags in attendance). With openings in Italy and Japan to look forward to, Apes still has a lot of money left to earn.
Final Destination 5 grossed $19 million from 35 territories for a foreign total of $58.6 million. It had a respectable $4.7 million first place start in France, and it also held the top spot again in Russia with $3.7 million. The movie had a poor debut in Australia, though, where its $1 million was just over half of what The Final Destination opened to two years ago. With a worldwide total just shy of $102 million through Monday, Final Destination 5 is set to expand in to South Korea this coming weekend.
Horrible Bosses had its best weekend yet with an $8.9 million haul. Its foreign total reached $69.5 million, and its poised to pass $200 million worldwide in the next few weeks.
One of the summer's biggest disappointments, Cowboys & Aliens, continued to drag along, adding $8.8 million from 42 markets for a total of $50 million. That included a decent $2.2 million first place start in Spain. Cowboys moves in to Brazil, Finland and Norway next weekend.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 earned $5.7 million, bringing its foreign total to a huge $937.2 million. That pushed its worldwide total past $1.3 billion, making it the third movie in history to reach that milestone.
