As things start to quiet down in the box office, Unbreakable kept the heat on totaling $10.3 million in France in just 13 days. It survived its biggest threat in Meet the Parents by taking $3.8 million. In the U.K., Unbreakable actually improved by 9% even after the holiday weekend, taking $3.2 million again beating off Meet the Parents, which increased 35% in its fourth lap earning $2.2 million. But things didn't fare so well everywhere. In Germany, The M. Night Shyamalan thriller dropped 21% from least week, but still achieved greater earnings overall, at $3 million, thank the Ben Stiller comedy, which is in its fifth lap there. It rose 15%.
Type down another record for Unbreakable. The BVI debut in Denmark gave Disney's its highest opening ever with $345,000.
In Italy, $102 million film remained at the second spot in its third week, behind the mega local hit, Chiedimi se sono felice. The Bruce Willis-Samuel L. Jackson starrer reeled in $1.7 million, up 76% from last weekend.
Meet the Parents held its own even after some of the first heavy competition for the film. It did however continued to grasp the totem pole in Spain. And in Australia it also grabbed the number one spot with $1,845,709, only down 23% after the New Year's Holiday weekend. It's totaled $6,836,059 Down Under.
Taking a fantastic start in Australia, Coyote Ugly's last opening, garnished $1.348,615 on 214 for a nice screen average of $6,302. Its totaled $2,422,147 after opening last Monday in Oz.
Also in Oz, the Oscar contender, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, ate up the second biggest screen average, after Fantasia 2000's IMAX opening on five screens, with $16,559. It took $182,152 on 11 screens for a total including sneaks of $492,531. Opening in Blighty as well, Tiger took a phenomenal debut of $860,000 on 86 screens.
Other noteworthy openers were Arnold Schwarzenegger's domestic box office flop The 6th Day. It earned $5.7 million on 3,256 engagements over the weekend, thanks to No. 1 bows in Brazil, The Philippines, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Yugoslavia. Its foreign total is already above the domestic $34.5 million at $39.9 million.
20th Century Fox's Robert De Niro-Cuba Gooding, Jr. starrer, Men of Honor took $920,000 on 136 screens in Mexico where the opening weekend have an average of 65% of the total gross there.
Vertical Limit opened at the top spot in South Africa on 75 screens with $268,000 and in Finland reaping $157,000 from 35 screens. Its foreign total is $28 million, thanks too great performances from Australia and Japan.
Urban Legends: Final Cut took $1.4 million this weekend.
