Great To Be Nominated Film Series to Feature 'Wilson'
Beverly Hills, CA—The 1944 Best Picture nominee Wilson will be screened as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' series "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two." A newly restored print of the film, preserved by the Academy Film Archive and 20th Century Fox, will be shown on Monday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Wilson, starring Alexander Knox, Charles Coburn, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Vincent Price, was initiated by 20th Century-Fox production head Darryl F. Zanuck while he was serving in World War II. Although it was not a boxoffice success, Wilson was an unusually elaborate, ambitious and exhaustively researched look at the 28th president and his attempt to found the League of Nations.
Wilson received 10 Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture, Actor (Knox), Directing (Henry King), Music—Score (Alfred Newman) and Special Effects (Fred Sersen, Roger Heman) and won Oscars® for Art Direction—Color (Wiard Ihnen, Thomas Little), Cinematography—Color (Leon Shamroy), Film Editing (Barbara McLean), Sound Recording (20th Century-Fox Studio Sound Department, E.H. Hansen, Sound Director) and Writing—Original Screenplay (Lamar Trotti).
The 1944 Oscar-nominated Cartoon Short Subject "Swooner Crooner" also will be featured during the program, as will the live action Short Subject Oscar winners, "Who's Who in Animal Land" (one-reel) and "I Won't Play" (two-reel).
The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from Wilson on the cover.
Passes for "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two" are still available at a cost of $30 for those wishing to see the rest of the series in its entirety. A $5 discount is available for those people who wish to renew their passes from Part One of the series. Inclusive of "Wilson," there are 14 screening dates remaining in Part Two.
Tickets for each screening may be purchased on an individual basis at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification.
