Around-the-World Roundup: 'Black Swan' Blossoms
Black Swan is proving to not only be a surprise hit domestically, but also a major draw overseas as well: the Darren Aronofsky-directed ballet drama inched ahead of chart regulars The Green Hornet and Tangled to take the top spot at the foreign box office over the weekend. French comedy Rien a Declarer (Nothing to Declare) was once again a strong presence, while The King's Speech reached a few milestones on its already-impressive run.

Black Swan earned $19.4 million from 34 territories for a foreign total of $72.6 million. It opened in third place in France and Mexico with $4.7 million and $1.3 million, respectively, and also had strong holdover performances in Germany ($2 million), the United Kingdom ($1.7 million) and Russia ($1.7 million). Its worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total now rests north of $172 million, and with openings in Italy, Spain and a handful of other countries next weekend it should be able to reach $200 million in the near future.

The Green Hornet scored another $18 million, thanks mostly to a huge start in China. The superhero comedy's $11.1 million six-day start there was impressive for an import and was due at least partially to Jay Chou's pop star status. The movie's overseas total reached $106.9 million, and it likely passed $200 million worldwide on Monday.

Tangled added $17.5 million from 52 territories (representing 88 percent of the international market). It opened to $2.8 million in South Korea, which was strong for a U.S. animated movie. It also grossed $4.4 million in Spain and $3.2 million in the U.K., and its total reached $310.1 million. On Sunday, it passed $500 million worldwide, and, with March openings in Thailand and Japan, it should eventually reach $600 million.

Nothing to Declare dipped 35 percent to $14.7 million for a total of $45.9 million. Not surprisingly, France was the big earner again with $13 million. Its 36 percent decline there was much steeper than writer-director-star Dany Boon's Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis, which eased just ten percent in its second frame.

Remaining remarkably consistent, The King's Speech earned another $13.3 million for a foreign total of $106.1 million. That included a solid $3.3 million debut in France and another $3.1 million in the U.K., which brought its total there to an excellent $52.3 million. The Oscar favorite pushed its worldwide haul past $200 million, and it's set to open in Germany, Mexico and a handful of other territories this weekend.

Sanctum expanded a bit and grossed $12.1 million for a total of $26.3 million. It had respectable starts in South Korea ($2.3 million), Spain ($1.8 million) and Italy ($1.8 million), and it is scheduled to dive in to New Zealand on Friday.

Yogi Bear found another $10.3 million from 42 territories. It had disappointing starts in the U.K. ($2.9 million) and France ($553,000), though it did hold first place in Mexico for the third-straight session with $1.9 million. The family comedy has so far made $62.1 million and enters Spain this weekend.

Til Schweiger's Kokowaah was down just 12 percent to $7.5 million in its native Germany, which made up the majority of its $8.6 million weekend take. Through its second weekend, the movie has grossed $21.8 million.

True Grit had its first major international expansion, though the results were generally unfavorable. Its top performance was in Spain, where it netted a $2 million second-place debut. Its $2.9 million fourth-place start in the U.K. was solid, but its openings in Brazil ($624,000) and Russia ($595,000) were poor. Overall, True Grit earned $8.4 million for a total of $14.6 million, and it's set to open in another 20 territories this coming weekend.
