Friday Report: 'Purge' Slays, 'Sex Tape' Disappoints on Friday
The Purge: Anarchy took first place on Friday, though it will almost certainly fall behind Dawn of the Planet of the Apes over the three-day weekend.

Playing at 2,805 theaters, the horror sequel earned an estimated $13 million on opening day. That's down 22 percent from the first Purge, which debuted to $16.8 million last June. If it follows the first movie's pattern, it will wind up with just over $26 million for the weekend. Reviews and word-of-mouth have improved time around, though, so it could hold a bit better through the weekend.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fell 62 percent to $10.4 million. That's a decent hold for a highly-anticipated sequel: The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Transformers: Age of Extinction all fell over 71 percent at the same point. For the weekend, Apes should wind up between $33 and $36 million.

In third place, Planes: Fire & Rescue earned estimated $6.3 million on its first day in theaters. In comparison, the first Planes scored $8.2 million last August. Fire & Rescue is now on track to earn around $17 million this weekend.

Sex Tape opened in fourth place with a disappointing $5.7 million. That's less than half of Bad Teacher's $12.2 million debut, and is also a big step down from Horrible Bosses ($9.9 million). For the weekend, the Cameron Diaz-Jason Segel comedy will earn anywhere from $14 to $16 million.

Transformers: Age of Extinction rounded out the Top Five with $2.7 million. That brings its total to $219.9 million, which makes it the highest-grossing movie ever for star Mark Wahlberg. For the weekend, it's on track to earn around $9 million.

Weekend Projections

1. Dawn/Apes - $35 million

2. The Purge - $28 million

3. Planes - $17 million

4. Sex Tape - $15 million

5. Transformers - $9 million
