Around the World Roundup: 'Bourne' Still on Top
Abating 32 percent, The Bourne Ultimatum remained atop the foreign box office over the weekend with $14.2 million from 49 nations for a $145.6 million total. The action thriller had two No. 1 debuts in Portugal ($375,110 from 55 screens) and in Serbia & Montenegro ($$15,754 from 7) as well as a good start in India ($280,247 from 40), but holdovers provided the bulk of its gross. Aside from several smaller markets, Bourne has yet to open in China, Italy and Japan, all of which are scheduled for November.

Premiering in second place, Resident Evil: Extinction nabbed a solid $8.1 million weekend from just four territories. In Russia, the zombie sequel raked in $4.4 million, which more than quadrupled the openings of its predecessors. It had similar success in the Ukraine with $524,819 from 49 screens while, in Mexico, it was strong with a series best $2.2 million from 350 screens. The previous movies each had higher foreign grosses than domestic, with the previous picture, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the current franchise high at $78.2 million.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry rose to third place on $5.1 million from 28 territories. The Adam Sandler comedy has yet to find success outside of the English-speaking territories and Russia. The sheer size of its release is why it has eked out $26.9 million thus far. It had poor starts in the Czech Republic (with $29,772 from 26), Argentina ($79,861 from 29) and Poland ($133,981 from 48). In the United Kingdom, it was decent with a $2.2 million debut from 394 screens but it failed to top the third weekends of both Run, Fat Boy, Run and Atonement as well Sandler's last comedy Click. Meanwhile, Atonement although still placing below Run, Fat Boy, Run on the weekend chart pulled ahead in total gross with $13.6 million compared to Boy's $12.8 million thanks to strong mid-week returns.

The Simpsons Movie, which had no new territories, slid to fourth place with $5 million from 11 markets for a $332.1 million total. In Italy, the animated comedy fell an expected 45 percent to $4.6 million for a $17.2 million total.

Superbad secured the fifth spot with a $5 million weekend from nine markets for an early $9.9 million total. The comedy showed strength in its holdovers, easing four percent in New Zealand and 28 percent in the U.K., but was mediocre in non-English markets. For instance, the comedy grossed $86,427 from 31 screens in Portugal and $442,813 from 237 in Italy, and it didn't show promise in Denmark and Sweden with openings of $172,452 and $288,721, respectively.
