Seven-Day Summary: Gap Widens Between 'Takers' and 'Exorcism'
While Takers eked out a weekend victory over The Last Exorcism, it played to substantially larger crowds throughout the week, widening the gap. The Expendables and Eat Pray Love settled for third and fourth place on typical declines, The Other Guys rounded out the Top Five for the second week in a row, and Avatar: Special Edition was largely ignored. Overall box office was off around five percent from last year, when The Final Destination had a series-best $35.1 million start.
Takers earned $26.5 million in its first seven days, putting it $1.7 million ahead of The Last Exorcism. This was a marked improvement over similar movies Dead Presidents, ATL, Street Kings and Armored, though it lagged behind The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.
The Last Exorcism debuted to $24.8 million, which was slightly lower than The Haunting in Connecticut but a bit higher than The Unborn among recent supernatural horror movies. Monday-through-Friday accounted for less than 18 percent of its opening week, which suggests a front-loaded run.
The Expendables dipped 46 percent to $13.1 million, bringing its three-week total to $85.6 million. The men-on-a-mission movie trailed Inglourious Basterds by over $12 million through the same point, though it is on track to pass the $100 million mark.
Eat Pray Love fell 44 percent to $10.4 million for a total of $64.1 million. It's lead over Julie & Julia has fallen to less than $1 million through the same point, and it should start trailing it sometime this weekend.
The Other Guys reached $100 million on Tuesday, its 26th day, and has now outgrossed Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's last collaboration Step Brothers. For the week, the buddy cop comedy was off 40 percent to $8.7 million for a total of $101.5 million.
Due more to the generally weak offerings than to its already-established staying power, Inception moved up from ninth to sixth place this week. It was down 40 percent to $6.9 million for a seven-week haul of $272.6 million.
Avatar: Special Edition debuted in 11th place with $5.5 million. While this may not be as high as many had hoped, it helped drive Avatar's already record-breaking total to an astounding $755.3 million.
