Inception dipped 25 percent to $35.9 million in 62 markets. The Christopher Nolan mindbender remained in first place in Germany and Australia, where it earned $3 million and $2.8 million, respectively. Through its fifth weekend, Inception has tallied an impressive $315.4 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total (domestic plus foreign) to $564 million.
Toy Story 3 fell a light 23 percent to $22.7 million from 49 territories, which represented 97 percent of the international marketplace. It spent its sixth straight weekend on top in Japan, where it earned another $6.1 million for a $95.8 million total. Also of note was a $5.1 million haul in the United Kingdom, where it is the top-grossing animated movie of all-time with $91.5 million. With a $539.3 million overseas haul, Toy Story 3 has officially knocked off Finding Nemo to become Disney's biggest-grossing animated feature ever overseas. It also became the top-grossing animated movie ever worldwide on Friday, passing Shrek 2's $919.8 million, and has moved in to ninth place on the all-time worldwide chart with $940.1 million.
With a different distributor in nearly every territory, official, comprehensive numbers are still unavailable for the The Expendables. With the information that has been gathered, though, it appears the ensemble action movie earned at least $15 million in around 20 territories. This includes a solid first place debut in Russia ($6.4 million), along with decent second place showings in Australia ($3.1 million) and Spain ($1.8 million).
In its best overseas weekend yet, The Sorcerer's Apprentice earned an estimated $15 million from 41 territories (65 percent of the marketplace). This included good starts in France ($4.7 million), Japan ($3.4 million) and Brazil ($1.2 million), along with a weak initial showing in the U.K. ($2 million). Through its fifth weekend, Apprentice has stirred up $72.5 million overseas for a worldwide total of $132 million.
Step Up 3-D finished in fifth place for the weekend, grossing $14.3 million in twenty territories. Its top result came from Russia, where it debuted to $4.1 million. Through its second weekend, Step Up 3-D has earned just under $34 million.
The Last Airbender, Salt and Grown Ups each grossed around $9.4 million this weekend, though their international totals differed: Salt has thus far made $83 million, The Last Airbender has tallied $69 million, and Grown Ups has claimed $49.9 million. The Karate Kid and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore rounded out the Top Ten, earning $8.8 and $8.2 million, respectively.
