Seven-Day Summary: 'The Town' Flexes Its Muscle
After topping the weekend box office, The Town played well throughout the week to maintain a commanding lead. In second place, Easy A also had a strong debut for its genre, while Devil was middling and Alpha and Omega was soft. Overall business was comparable to the same week last year, when Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs debuted to $35.4 million.

The Town earned $33.1 million for the week, which compared favorably to the more star-studded The Departed's $38 million start in 2006. In another positive indicator, The Town made 28 percent of its opening week grosses in the Monday through Thursday period, compared to The Departed's 29 percent.

Easy A's $22.1 million start crushed that of Jennifer's Body, which opened in the same timeframe last year. The Emma Stone comedy also saw greater initial attendance than 10 Things I Hate About You and The House Bunny, though it lagged behind John Tucker Must Die.

Devil finished the week in third place with $15.3 million despite falling to fourth place behind Resident Evil: Afterlife for the Monday through Thursday period. While this wasn't a terrible start, it's still the lowest-ever opening week for an M. Night Shyamalan-branded horror movie, and also the lowest opening for the ubiquitous supernatural horror genre since last January's The Uninvited.

Resident Evil: Afterlife fell a series-average 61 percent to $13.2 million for a 14-day haul of $47.1 million. It's now on pace to pass Resident Evil: Apocalypse's $51.2 million in the next few days, though it will remain the least-attended Resident Evil movie for the time being (as its grosses are inflated by the 3D illusion premium).

Alpha and Omega rounded out the Top Five for the week, grossing $10.4 million. This set a new low for a 3D movie in over 2,000 theaters, a dubious distinction that had previously been held by Piranha 3D for less than a month.
