Monday Nights with Oscar® Presents 'The Pride of the Yankees'
New York, NY—The Academy Award®-winning film, The Pride of the Yankees, will be screened on Monday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan. This next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' monthly screening series, "Monday Nights with Oscar," chronicles the life and career of the New York Yankees' legendary first baseman and Hall of Famer, Lou Gehrig. Film historian and author Robert Osborne will host the evening.
Considered by many today as the finest baseball movie ever made, The Pride of the Yankees follows Gehrig from his historic 14-year major league career through his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating nerve disease, which forced him to retire early in 1939. His farewell speech, made upon his retirement, helped immortalize the quiet personality as a hero and an all-American role model.
The Pride of the Yankees, which features several of Gehrig's real-life teammates playing themselves, including Bill Dickey, Bob Meusel, Mark Koenig, Bill Stern and Babe Ruth, won the Oscar in 1942 for Film Editing (Daniel Mandell).
Starring Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig, Teresa Wright as Eleanor Gehrig and Walter Brennan as Sam Blake, the RKO film was also honored with 10 additional Academy Award nominations, including Outstanding Motion Picture (Samuel Goldwyn Productions), Lead Actor (Cooper) and Actress (Wright), Art Direction—Black and White (Art Direction - Perry Ferguson; Interior Decoration—Howard Bristol), Cinematography—Black and White (Rudolph Maté), Music—Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Leigh Harline), Sound Recording (Samuel Goldwyn Studio Sound Department; Thomas T. Moulton, Sound Director), Special Effects (Photographic Effects—Jack Cosgrove and Ray Binger; Sound Effects—Thomas T. Moulton), Writing—Original Motion Picture Story (Paul Gallico) and Writing—Screenplay (Jo Swerling and Herman J. Mankiewicz).
