'Spider-Man,' 'About a Boy' Survive 'Attack'
On Friday, Spider-Man remained relatively unphased by the advent of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, while Hugh Grant's latest romantic comedy About a Boy wooed solid numbers.
Spider-Man reeled in an estimated $11,566,000, down 41.9% from last Friday and holding up better than that day's 49.5% dip. In 15 days, the total has scaled to an estimated $252,102,000, landing the Marvel Comics adaptation at No. 19 on the all time chart right behind Monsters, Inc.'s $253,134,079 and ahead of another major superhero, Batman's $251,134,079, to become the highest grossing comic book movie of all time.
The Friday gross points to a $40 million plus third weekend for Spidey, which would bring its 17 day total to over $280 million and well past Shrek's $267,665,011 to become the 15th highest grossing picture of all time. Spider-Man's now on course to hit the $300 million mark by its 23rd day of release (May 25), shattering yet another record by becoming the fastest movie to reach that milestone.
Counter-programming for success, About a Boy debuted in fourth place on Friday with an estimated $2,606,000 from 1,207 theaters, a gross that was almost equal to the $2,692,819 weekend that The Love Letter posted against The Phantom Menace in 1999. The $30 million Boy should mature to about $8.5 million by Sunday, and will add about 500 theaters next weekend.
