Playing at 3,594 theaters, Taken 3 opened to an estimated $14.7 million on Friday. That's off 20 percent from Taken 2's $18.4 million debut; given how poor the reception seemed to be for the second installment, that's actually a pretty solid hold.
Taken 3 also opened roughly on par with Lone Survivor, which took in $14.4 million on this same day last year. If Taken 3 holds up similarly, it will finish the weekend with over $38 million (which will rank third all-time in January).
In a distant second place, Selma earned $3.8 million from 2,179 locations. That's less than half of The Butler's $8.3 million debut, and is in the same general range as disappointing political dramas like J. Edgar ($4.26 million) and W. ($3.8 million). If Selma follows the same pattern as Zero Dark Thirty—which opened on this same date two years ago—it will finish the weekend with less than $11 million.
Angelina Jolie's Unbroken took third place with $2.6 million, which brings its total to $95.8 million. On Sunday, it should reach $100 million. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies dropped from first place to fourth place on Friday, adding $2.47 million for a total of $229.5 million. Into the Woods rounded out the Top Five with $2.46 million, and will pass $100 million sometime today.
The Imitation Game doubled its theater count to 1,566, but still fell 27 percent to $2.15 million. To date, the World War II drama has earned $35.4 million.
After nearly a month in limited release, Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice expanded to 645 locations and took 11th place with $960,000. That's lower than The Master's $1.4 million, and half of Her (2013)'s $1.85 million (albeit at nearly three times as many theaters). For the weekend, Inherent Vice will likely earn less than $3 million.
1. Taken 3 - $38 million
2. Selma - $11 million
3. The Hobbit - $9.6 million
4. Into the Woods - $9 million
5. Unbroken - $8.5 million
