'Spider-Man' Holds Its Own Against 'Star Wars' with $3.5 Million Thursday
Despite falling to second place on Thursday, Spider-Man remained undaunted by the advent of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones's $30,141,417 opening day. The Marvel Comics adaptation captured $3,514,866, dipping 17.2% from Wednesday and 52.9% from the previous Thursday.
In two weeks, Spider-Man has scaled to $240,536,756, up one spot on the all time chart from Wednesday to No. 24. The famed webslinger's tally sits between Twister's $241,721,524 and Ghostbusters' $238,632,124. By the end of its third weekend, Spidey should spin past Shrek's $267,665,011 to become the 15th highest grossing picture of all time.
Spider-Man's also still on course to hit the $300 million mark by its 24th day of release (May 26), breaking yet another record by becoming the fastest movie to reach that milestone.
Current title holder Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace crossed the $300 million mark in its 28th day on course to a $431,088,297 final gross. On its second Thursday, it grabbed $5,011,928 for $222,866,471 after 16 days. The second fastest to $300 million, Titanic, took 44 days on its way to becoming the highest grossing movie of all time at $600,788,188, while Harry Potter reached the milestone in 52 days and is close to the end of its run with $317,519,436 in the till.
