So far, Jason Kaplan of Boston, MA ranks No. 1 overall with 80.59% total average accuracy, while Box Office Mojo itself currently ranks No. 3. To date, more than 800 unique users have tested their predicting prowess at the Box Office Derby, averaging 425 entries per week.
The results of each week's game are posted Tuesdays, the winner being the player who has the most accurate predictions (expressed in the form of a percentage, e.g., 85.5% accurate). Players are then awarded points based on their accuracy for the week (85.5% accurate equals 85.5 points for the week). The points accumulate for the all-time ranking, as well as for periodic contests.
The all-time chart, sorted by total accumulated points, shows the name, total points awarded, the number of games played and the average prediction accuracy of the top 100 players.
All players in a given week receive a personalized e-mail (after final weekend figures are reported) showing the results of their predictions as well their overall score and average predicting accuracy.
This month the user with the highest overall score will win a toaster, a prize suggested tongue-in-cheek by one of the game's players.
'The goal of the Box Office Derby is to offer something fun for our readers and an extra thing that the site's stats and analysis can be used for," says Brandon Gray, founder of Box Office Mojo. 'There are similar games on the Internet, but we believe that the simplicity and straightforwardness of the Derby offers our readers the purest test of overall predicting prowess."
