FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Academy Series Presents 'The King and I'
Beverly Hills, CA — A newly-restored print from the original 55mm negative of The King and I will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, August 20, at 8 p.m., in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Presented as part of the Gold Standard series, this screening marks the first time that the public will be able to see the film in its intended aspect ratio.
The King and I stars Yul Brynner, Deborah Kerr, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson and Carlos Rivas in the screen adaptation of the Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers play, based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. Produced by Charles Brackett, the 1956 Best Picture nominee earned five Academy Awards from a total of nine nominations. Oscar statuettes were won for Actor (Brynner), Art Direction – Color (Lyle R. Wheeler, John DeCuir; Set Decoration: Walter M. Scott, Paul S. Fox), Costume Design – Color (Irene Sharaff), Music – Scoring of a Musical Picture (Alfred Newman, Ken Darby) and Sound Recording (Twentieth Century Fox Studio Sound Department, Carl Faulkner, Sound Director).
Nominations also were earned for Actress (Kerr), Cinematography – Color (Leon Shamroy), Directing (Walter Lang) and Best Picture (Brackett).
The King and I is one of only two feature films ever completed in CinemaScope 55 (the other was Carousel, also in 1956). But when originally distributed, the release prints made were from a 35mm reduction negative. In addition to the print restoration, the original stereo soundtrack has been faithfully re-created in 4-track Dolby Digital stereo. The program will be introduced by Twentieth Century Fox executive Schawn Belston, and will feature an on-stage discussion with Marni Nixon, who provided the singing voice for Kerr's Anna.
Tickets for the August 20 Gold Standard screening of The King and I are $5 for the general public, $3 for Academy members. They may be purchased in advance at the Academy during regular business hours, by mail, or on the night of the screening, if still available, when the doors open at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
