Neither the experts nor the zealous fans foresaw Spider-Man's multi-record breaking opening last weekend. Most Derby players—66% of them—thought Spider-Man would only swing past The Lost World: Jurassic Park's No. 2 opening weekend record.
Nineteen players had the Spidey-Sense to see the film would beat Harry Potter's all-time opening weekend record of $90.3 million. One such player was ajb27 of St. Catharines, Ont., who simply said, "Spider will beat Harry." Jason Harris of Sacramento theorized that, "The Spider-Man fan base will even beat Harry Potter, due to an even wider age spread." Only five players predicted over $100 million and not one player over-predicted Spider-Man's actual $114.8 million total.
Heffro in New York came the closest to Spider-Man, estimating $103.6 million (90.24% accurate), which helped him rank #49 for the weekend.
But predicting Spider-Man was only part of winning last week's game. "The rest of the box office should falter big-time with the release of Spider-Man," said Stupidllamas of Rantoul, IL, who was the week's Derby Champion. Alex DelVecchio of Edison, NJ keenly observed that, "Spider-Man should leave no room for any other movies to break $10 million."
The average prediction accuracy was 58.67%, the second lowest in the Derby's history.
If Spider-Fans did not predict with enough enthusiasm in their numbers, they did so with passion in their words. Player Mike Dinerstein said, "Spidey is tough to predict since I believe its opening weekend is going to be astronomically large. That could just be because I'm a huge fan, but I also think that it's because of its wide-appeal and HUGE hype." Player Nemo expressed that "Spider-Man will wrap up the box office in a web of glory." And Adam J. Hakari in Wisconsin said, "If Spider-Man doesn't open huge, I'm defecting to DC Comics."
How will Spider-Man hold up in its second week at the box office? Be sure to send in your predictions by midnight on Thursday for this week's Box Office Derby.
