'Harry Potter' Holds Onto Home Video Crown
HOLLYWOOD (Box Office Mojo) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's spell over the VHS and DVD rentals charts has not worn off yet, according to the Video Software Dealers Association.
The boy wizard pulled in $7.76 million in combined VHS and DVD rental revenue during the week ending June 9 to top the chart for the second time in a row. Potter, though, descended 39% for a grand total of $21.16 million, or 6.7% of the $317,575,550 it conjured in theaters.
The Tom Cruise mind trip Vanilla Sky held onto second place with $7.07 million for $28.31 million after three weeks. Director Cameron Crowe's "cover" of the 1997 Spanish picture Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) uncovered $100,618,344 at the box office.
Bowing in third place was The Mothman Prophecies. Though it topped all DVD rentals, the Richard Gere thriller started at a less auspicious No. 4 on VHS, collecting $6.72 million overall or 19% of the $35,228,696 it grabbed at the box office earlier this year.
Ocean's Eleven made off with $5.61 million in its fifth week on rental shelves, lifting its tally to $52.32 million or about 28.5% of the $183,417,150 it rang up in theaters.
Rounding out the top five, Abre los ojos director Alejandro Amenabar's The Others nabbed $5.20 million. The Nicole Kidman thriller's tally has risen to $35.01 million after four weeks, equaling 36.3% of the $96,522,687 it rattled out of the box office last year.
Overall, DVD rentals totaled $48.4 million, down 8.0 percent from last week, and VHS rentals amassed $101.6 million, down 2.3 percent. Compared to the same frame last year, DVD was up 121.1 percent, while VHS was down 21.5 percent.
