Q. I was looking at the Top Grossing Movies That Never Hit #1 chart and was wondering: What are the top grossing movie that were never in the top 10?

The top five movies that were never in the top 10 on a weekend box office chart (1982-present) are all IMAX releases, understandably—they play for a long time at very few theaters. Look at the All Time IMAX chart for the list of five.

For non-IMAX releases, the top grossing movies to never appear in the top 10 on the weekend chart are:

1. In the Bedroom (Miramax) - $35.9M
2. The Pianist (Focus) - $32.6M
3. Monster's Ball (Lions Gate) - $31.3M
4. The Gods Must Be Crazy (Fox) - $30.0M
5. Howards End (Sony) - $30.0M
6. Waking Ned Devine (Fox Searchlight) - $24.8M
7. Much Ado About Nothing (Samuel Goldwyn) - $22.5M
8. Adaptation (Sony) - $22.5 M
9. Il Postino (Miramax) - $21.8M
10. Like Water For Chocolate (Miramax) - $21.7M

Garden State has grossed $21.0 million as of 9/20/2004 and should break into this list by the end of its run.
