Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
August 16, 2014
With The Expendables 3 bombing, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy easily held on to the top two spots at the box office on Friday. Ninja Turtles fell 69 percent to an estimated $7.9 million. That drop is roughly on par with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which was off 68 percent at the same point. Turtles will pass $100 million sometime today; for the weekend, it should wind up anywhere from $24 to $27 million. Guardians of the Galaxy eased 44 percent to $6.95 million. It passed $200 million yesterday, and in the process moved ahead of Summer 2014 releases Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. For the weekend, Guardians will likely earn around $24 million. The Expendables 3 opened in third place with an estimated $5.88 million. That's down 44 percent from The Expendables 2, which is a horrible drop for a closely-timed sequel. For the weekend, the third Expendables movie could wind up below $16 million. Let's Be Cops took fourth place with $5.63 million, which brings its three-day total to $14 million. While it has fallen way behind We're the Millers and Tropic Thunder, it's still on pace to reach $25 million by Sunday—that's a serious score for a low-budget comedy lacking any major stars.
