Friday Report: 'Fault' Shines, 'Edge' Flatlines on Friday

The Fault in our Stars

June 7, 2014

Young-adult romance The Fault in our Stars opened to a stunning $26.1 million yesterday. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow disappointed with just $10.7 million.

The Fault in our Stars
had one of the biggest opening days of the year: it was ahead of last weekend's Maleficent ($24.3 million) and fellow Shailene Woodley young-adult adaptation Divergent ($22.8 million). A big part of that was an $8.2 million haul on Thursday, which suggests that Fault will be somewhat front-loaded through the weekend. Still, it looks poised to earn at least $57 million for the three-day frame.

In second place, Edge of Tomorrow's $10.7 million debut was lower than Cruise's last movie Oblivion ($13.3 million) and last August's Elysium ($11.1 million). For the weekend, Edge will likely wind up a bit below $30 million.

Maleficent
fell 58 percent to $10.14 million. In comparison, the other three major Summer movies (Spider-Man, Godzilla, X-Men) all dropped over 70 percent on their second Friday. The movie passed $100 million yesterday, and should earn around $33 million for the weekend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past
fell 52 percent to $4.5 million. To date, the superhero sequel has earned $178.9 million.

Rounding out the Top Five, A Million Ways to Die in the West plummeted 64 percent to $2.2 million. That's a horrible drop for a comedy, and guarantees that this movie will close well below $50 million (it's earned $25.2 million so far).

Weekend Projections
1. Fault in Our Stars - $58 million
2. Maleficent - $33 million
3. Edge of Tomorrow - $29.5 million
4. X-Men - $15 million
