The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 once again led the foreign box office this weekend, and has already become the highest-grossing Twilight movie ever overseas. Meanwhile, Rise of the Guardians expanded in to most overseas markets and performed decently, while Skyfall continued its steady march towards $1 billion worldwide.

Breaking Dawn Part 2
added an estimated $48.8 million this weekend for a new foreign total of $447.8 million. That tops Breaking Dawn Part 1's franchise record of $430.9 million; with a few major markets like Japan and China still on the horizon, the fifth and final Twilight movie is guaranteed to close with over $500 million overseas. One interesting note: the movie's top market is the U.K. with $49.9 million, while its second-best territory is actually Brazil with $41.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $702.4 million.

Rise of the Guardians
earned $38.3 million from 55 markets this weekend for an early total of $55.1 million. It opened in first place in France and Mexico with $4.7 million and $3.7 million, respectively, while it also performed well in Brazil ($3.1 million), Italy ($3.1 million), and South Korea ($2.7 million). It was less impressive in the U.K. (under $3 million), Germany ($1.6 million) and Spain ($1.4 million). None of these grosses are particularly strong for a DreamWorks Animation movie, though the expectation is that it holds up well throughout the holiday season.

Skyfall
grossed $34 million from 84 markets this weekend. It reached Japan, one of its final major territories, and earned an estimated $5.93 million. While that doesn't look like much, it is 51 percent higher than Quantum of Solace. Elsewhere, its top territory was once again Australia with $8 million, while its U.K. total pushed past $150 million (it's now a day or two away from becoming the top movie ever there ahead of Avatar). Skyfall's new foreign total is $623 million (a Bond record by nearly $200 million), and worldwide it's at $869 million. From its existing markets, it's going to easily get past $950 million, and it will be up to China to close the gap to $1 billion.

Life of Pi
had another great weekend overseas—Ang Lee's adaptation of the best-selling novel added $24.4 million for a very early total of $63.5 million. In China it held about even at $13.8 million, and has already earned $40 million there. Pi was also up 47 percent to $2.6 million in Taiwan; the movie's great holds in these two markets suggests word-of-mouth is going to be very beneficial throughout its foreign run. Finally, Pi had good first place openings in Spain ($2.4 million), Singapore ($1.05 million) and Malaysia (just under $1 million) this weekend.

Other Notables - Weekend Gross - Gross-to-Date (in millions)
Argo - $4.1 - $56
Wreck-It Ralph - $1.5 - $44
