Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is quickly turning in to an early year hit at the overseas box office. The sequel once again topped the charts this weekend with $27.5 million from 43 markets for a total of $130 million. It added $9.5 million in China and $4.1 million in Russia, and opened in second in France with $3.1 million. Journey 2 is now only a few days away from passing the original Journey to the Center of the Earth's $140.3 million foreign total, and a $200 million finish seems well within reach. Based on available figures, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance finished in second with around $12.5 million. It was okay in the U.K. and France ($2.1 million in both markets) but was more successful in Mexico ($1.6 million) and Malaysia ($1.1 million). This Means War took third with $11 million from 15 territories. It had an impressive $5.9 million first place start in Russia, and was also strong in Australia ($3.1 million including previews).
After a somewhat disappointing opening, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace's 3D re-release did little to save face this weekend. The movie fell 49 percent to $10.4 million, and has so far brought in a meager $37.5 million. Across all its releases, though, The Phantom Menace has now earned $997.6 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign), and by the end of the week it should become the 11th movie to ever pass $1 billion.
The Descendants continued its very impressive overseas run by adding $7.9 million for a total of $68.7 million. It's only major opening came in Italy, where it earned a decent $1.5 million.
Turkish historical epic Fetih 1453 (translated as Conquest 1453) opened to $7.8 million in four markets. The movie, which covers the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in 1453, had the second-highest opening in Turkey in the history of Box Office Mojo's tracking ($6.3 million) behind Recep Ivedik 3.
The Vow scored another $7.7 million from 24 markets for an early total of $25.2 million. It added $2.1 million in Australia, $1.6 million in the U.K. and $1.4 million in Germany. Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol grossed $7.4 million to bring its monster total to $463.5 million. In the process, it moved up to 50th on the all-time worldwide chart with $670.9 million.
After fading from the charts for a few weeks, In Time was back in a big way with a $4.58 million first place opening in Japan. It also opened in second in Italy with $1.8 million. The movie has made over $114 million overseas so far, bringing its worldwide total to just over $150 million.
