Reinforcing Tom Cruise's status as an international superstar, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol had no problem leading the foreign box office for the third weekend in a row. The fourth installment in the espionage franchise added $46.2 million from 43 markets, and including Monday and Tuesday grosses has already made $245.7 million overseas. The movie opened last Monday (Boxing Day) in the United Kingdom, and has earned a strong $14.3 million through its first nine days there. Including its domestic revenues, Ghost Protocol is at around $390 million worldwide, and should pass $400 million in the next few days.

Similar to the domestic box office, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows wound up in second place behind Ghost Protocol with an estimated $34 million from 45 markets. It debuted in first place in Russia ($6.4 million, up 25 percent from the first Sherlock) and Mexico ($3.1 million), and currently has a $106 million foreign total. The adventure sequel still has six major markets left to open, including Spain and Australia this weekend.

Also mirroring the domestic charts, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rounded out the Top Three with $24 million from 57 markets. Its top territories were holdovers France and the U.K. where the movie made $5 million and $2.3 million, respectively. Through Sunday, the third Chipmunks movie has made $79.8 million overseas.

Puss in Boots extended its strong overseas run with another $21 million this weekend. Including Monday and Tuesday, the movie has grossed $285 million overseas for a worldwide total around $430 million. With South Korea and Japan still on the horizon, Puss in Boots should have no problem closing near the $500 million mark.

The Adventures of Tintin added at least $11.4 million this weekend for an overseas total of $261 million. Since opening on Monday in Australia, the movie has consistently held first place and through Sunday had earned a strong $8.6 million. Including its domestic earnings, Tintin passed $300 million worldwide this weekend.

Coinciding with the relevant holiday, New Year's Eve grossed $10 million from 55 markets for a total of $67.2 million. Its biggest territory was Italy with $1.3 million.

French blockbuster Intouchables held first place there for the ninth-straight weekend with $8.5 million. Its $145.8 million total there ranks third all-time behind Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis ($193.8 million) and Avatar ($158.3 million), which it should ultimately pass. Including some other smaller markets, Intouchables has tallied an impressive $157.7 million.

Thanks mostly to a solid opening in the U.K., The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo added $8.3 million this weekend for a total of $12.2 million. The movie debuted on Boxing Day in the U.K. and earned roughly $6.7 million through its first seven days in theaters. War Horse also opened on Boxing Day, albeit in Australia where it took fifth place for its first seven days with $4 million.
