Friday Report: 'True Grit' Ropes Top Spot
On Friday, True Grit (2010) edged out Little Fockers to top the box office, while new nationwide releases Season of the Witch and Country Strong were modest. Overall business was off precipitously from the same Friday last year, when Avatar led, and it was down significantly from the last time Friday landed on Jan. 7 (2005).
True Grit collected an estimated $4.45 million, cooling 46 percent from last Friday (New Year's Eve), when it also led. Since this is a non-holiday weekend, it's likely to maintain its lead over Little Fockers and score its first weekend victory. The Western has racked up a mighty $99.9 million in 17 days, and, on Saturday, it will surpass the final grosses of Unforgiven and Maverick. In terms of estimated attendance, it will top Brokeback Mountain on Saturday, and it's on the cusp of eclipsing Tombstone (Unforgiven and Maverick will likely prove insurmountable on this front).
Little Fockers claimed an estimated $4.25 million, off 45 percent and increasing its sum to $114.4 million in 17 days. Predecessor Meet the Fockers grossed $8.84 million on the same day and date in 2005, was down 27 percent and had grossed $184.6 million with around double the attendance.
Season of the Witch conjured an estimated $3.7 million at 2,816 locations, but it wasn't quite as cursed as its genre and positioning might have suggested. Medieval movies often struggle at the box office, and Season of the Witch made more in a single day than The Last Legion did in its first weekend. The movie marked the second release from distributor Relativity Media, and, on the bright side, more than tripled the opening day of their first, The Warrior's Way.
Tron Legacy was still in the mix with an estimated $2.7 million and has an excellent shot at regaining third place by the end of the weekend. Its total stood at $140.8 million in 22 days.
Hitting nationwide release (1,424 locations) after playing two venues the past 16 days, Country Strong scored $2.58 million. The music drama had a bigger nationwide break than Crazy Heart did last year, but the latter had a slower roll-out and more business under its belt.
Black Swan surged 25 percent from last Friday, drawing an estimated $2.43 million and growing its tally to a potent $55.5 million in 36 days. The Fighter held its ground in seventh place, easing 20 percent to an estimated $2.13 million for a $53 million sum in 29 days. The King's Speech was also solid with an estimated $1.76 million at a modest 758 locations for a $28.2 million total in 43 days.
Without the holiday boost, the family-oriented movies took a dive. Yogi Bear dropped 68 percent from last Friday to an estimated $1.3 million for a ho-hum $70.1 million in 22 days. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Tangled each fell 65 percent, while Gulliver's Travels tumbled 63 percent, earning an estimated $1.11 million for a lowly $31 million in 14 days.
